Compaq LTE ELITE 4/50E usablity for DOS, memory and what good for up to for some games?

Hi there, Got Compaq LTE ELITE 4/50E from ebay for good price and does work mostly aside from hard drive, will have to replace the clunking dead Quantum GO drive hard drive 250MB with something else. Back in the day, I had LTE 386s/20 for college from 1993 to around 1996 when battery finally gave out but finally got this 4/50E to relive the fun of old computer. This is grey scale *TFT* mono.

Will base 4MB sufficient or should I throw in another 4MB or 8MB? 16MB module is expensive but can get later.

I also have thinkpad 600 with 233mmx but would love to get pentium 100 or 133MHz of different model with TFT color notebook for gaming.

4MB should be ok for a 486 dos gaming laptop. 8mb would be nice though and benefit Windows alot.
More then 8MB would only really make a difference if your running Win95.

Game wise your probably good till around about 94ish. Doom for example will run but may stutter on a few of the bigger maps.
If RTS is more your thing think C&C/Warcrat2 which will slow down in bugger battles as well.
Anything SVGA won't be fun

Yes, because of only 4 MB. 😉 DOOM does in-game loading of assets if you have only 4 MB, and that causes the game to lag.

A 486 should have 8 MB at least if you want to play games on it. Most complex games you can then run are probably Dark Forces and Wing Commander III. Not sure how much fun games are on a mono screen, however.
