Hello everyone!

I recently was looking for old hardware and stumbled across 2 cool motherboards, that immediately caught my attention, because how unusual they are.
The ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA and the Jetway 849BS.
I was wondering, which of these boards is less common.
As far as I know, these boards are fairly popular collector items, mainly because how unique they are, but I simply can't decide which one I should get.
They're both relatively suitable, for building Windows 98 SE machines.
Both Boards costs around the same and they both are pretty good deals.
Unfortunately, I can only buy one of them, because right now I can't pay more than 40€.
Maybe you guys can tell me, which one I should aquire.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I never heard much about the Jetway 849B, is it’s only unique traits being a 462 motherboard with AT form factor and PSU support?

I think the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA has gotten a lot more attention around here due to the AGP and PCIe bus as well as C2D/C2Q support.

The ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA seems to be reasonably common to me, I've passed up a lot of chances of buying one because I don't care much for extremely high performing Win98 builds and it's not that interesting for a WinXP build either.
The Jetway 849BS seems a lot rarer (I've never had a chance of buying one) and like more of a novelty to me, and if all the cables for sound, gameport, PS2 and USB are included I would consider getting one even though from what I've read it performs rather badly.
But I'm no hardcore collector and at more than 20€ I'd pass up on both boards.
Hope this opinion helps you in some way. 🙂

Thanks Doornkaat

You really helped me a lot!
I'm going for the Jetway 849bs!
However, I'm definitely going to buy the 4CoreDual-VSTA/SATA2 in the future too.

Thanks for your help guys! I really appreciate that.

BinaryDemon I guess you're right. Thats probably its only unique traits.
I hope, you don't mind, if i'm buying it anyways. Doornkaat has convinced me.

It would be cool to build a sleeper system in a old case with the Jetway.

I hope, you don't mind, if i'm buying it anyways.

You might as well do full photo session and documentation (tests, overclocking, etc) of that board.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

The Serpent Rider As soon, as I got this Board, I will start a new topic and do a photo session.
If you want, i'll let you know, when I posted it.

The seller claims, this board is functional, but on the pictures, you can clearly see that the capacitors are slightly bulged.
(I will do a photo session, when i'm in possession of this nice relic of hardware history)
That means, i'll have to replace the caps, before I'm going to overclock and test this board.
I'm already very excited, to share everything with you guys, when i'm done. However, this project might take a few months.

Yeah, bad caps are to be expected with this board. It was meant as a cheap upgrade for an existing AT system so they probably didn't go for quality electrolytics. 😅
Still a nice find, have fun with the project!

I have bad news. I made a severe mistake. I should've bought it immediately, instead I started to bit for the auction.
Guess what. I lost. I'm going to buy the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA now. I feel so stupid right now.
I apologize, unfortunately, there will be no photo session. I'm dissapointed and frustrated, it's all my fault.

I think I know which auction you're talking about x3... I wanted to bid on that too and completely forgot... had neighbors over.

Please forgive me, in case I understood something wrong. Did your neighbors bid for the item, or did you (got) visited (by) your neighboors and forgot to bid? I apologize, for this awkward question, I know it sounds weird.
You are probably talking about that one, right? https://www.ebay.de/itm/ALi-849BS-Motherboard … utorefresh=true
In case you won this auction, I personally congratulate you! I'll be honest, you would probably deserve it more than I do.

no like I said, I completely forgot about it ^^ I only just checked into ebay before and was like... oh... right... I wanted to bid on that.

I saw your thread before and was like "hey I'm watching a board like that on ebay right now"... I honestly didn't know we were eyeing the same one ^^

the only reason I was so interested in it was because it is the first time I saw an AT socket 462 board.

Sucks, but don't be too bummed out. The board is a novelty but that's all it has going for it.
It has bad BIOS support, only supports short graphics cards due to the inconvenient placement of the RAM socket, this particular board has lots of bad caps, the non-AC'97-standard audio cable and PS/2 mouse cable are missing, the obviously underpowered (for K7 CPUs) cooler is missing the fan connector (did they actually test it?) and something looks funky behind the lowest PCI slot (might be dirt and compression artefacts but I'm not sure).
I can't tell what the buy it now price was but assuming it was above 10€ and adding 7€ shipping realistically this particular board was probably not worth it.

Doornkaat Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate that.
The seller said, they tested it and it indeed worked for him, but I doubt, it would've run very stable, due to the bulged capacitors.
The buy it now price was 30€, which would've been completely fine, but the shipping price was darn high. 7,00€ from Erbach to Auerbach is just ridicolously overpriced.
Before I contacted the seller, the shipping costs were 9,50€.
Unfortunately the seller did not accept offers, otherwise I would've done that.
You are probably right, it really wasn't worth it, especially, because of it's poor condition.
As I said, I'm going for the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA instead.
Well anyways, this was the first and last time, I tried to bid on something.
