I tried on 286 and it froze too so I assumed the driver is using 386 instructions - which is not surprising considering the original release date of the CS4235/36/37 chips - never really tried it again on another system lower than a 386 tbh
Will check it again on my V20 XT once I get it out of storage

That seems to be the case, but i will make my personal mission to disassemble the driver and try to patch it out. It might not use 386 instructions at all, it might just have a 386 check. If so, the card should then run on 286 and XT systems.

On 286 one can get success with 386EMU

works also with CTCM

Good to know. Thanks for mentioning that. I'm also an user of EMU386, by the way. 😀
It helped me to run Dos-J on a 286 running western MS-DOS 6.22, which is interesting,
because by contrast a real DOS/V (MS-DOS/V 6.20) installation comes with EMM386 loaded by default.

Edit:

Speaking of XTs and 386 instructions.. I hope we will see FPGA development reaching the point where/when
we will see hardware emulation of 8088/NEC V20 chips. And when we're at it, add some support for 286/386 instructions.
This would make the whole XT platform more usable as a whole. Maybe, perhaps maybe, someone is going further even,
and some bits of the Extended Memory find their ways into the design. So XTs can use HMA. Or run Windows 3.1. Or Minix 2. 😀

emphasis on "some IRQs" , anything above 7 is not accessible IIRC

we now have a bracket - first try so it needs some centering at the holes but even like this it's usable

we also have a new tool for the DBx cutouts, no more rectangular holes 😁

I’m still not convinced that I’m not just dreaming this whole thread. It’s my Dream Card - too late to change the name?

heheheh thanks for the support
I have been doing some recordings for testing purposes and so far all seem ok quality-wise. End results will be posted on the thread so everyone will know exactly what the deal is 😀
Basically whatever the CS4232 offers in terms of sb-pro compatibility the CS4237 will offer as well.
In the meantime here is some Alone in the Dark action (one of my favorite games) recorded from analog-out: https://mega.nz/#!QI9GQIpQ!wsOgLaObBpC_Xa-pbK … KxslXDgEx6Q0zuM

For people that are interested - first of all thank you for your interest it means lots to see people like the concept of this card - there is no waiting list or something similar atm, we will be ready soon to announce details. It just takes some time to make something that is good and won't hold any nasty surprises in the future. 😀

Thanks to James-F for the input! Optional Lowpass-Filtering is something i would also care about with a new clone card, pretty important if you ask me.

Thanks keropi and Marmes for the card! This is great news!! Keep up the good work, can't wait to hear the next updates on this...

As far as I can tell, the CS4237B does not offer selectable filtering as part of its Sound Blaster emulation. It is not implemented as part of the mixer register map. In fact, unless I have missed something, it doesn't offer any sort of selectable filtering in native WSS mode, either, with the exception of one filtering option on the ADC side. If there is any playback filtering, it doesn't appear to be user- or programmer-selectable. I think Tiido mentioned that the same is true for the YMF7xx line.

man this is really cool but the opl3 sounds different to what i'm used to - was this the sound of FM earlier than soundblaster 16? thats as far back as my ears go so i dont know the sound of the original soundblasters.

Maybe you grew up with Creatives "CQM" OPL3 implementation. Earlier cards used Yamaha OPL chips or licensed real OPL circuits in Creative chips but later cards used Creatives own OPL3 implementation called "CQM" which sounds different and sometimes worse.

Example of Doom E1M1 with CQM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHKWjvMwQgU

nah it was before vibra/cqm was about - our SB16 was from 94. i had a listen to a few samples of different ymf chips and also a little research on the different types/models - the YMF289B in this card is a low power version of the 262 for mobile devices/pcmcia and i feel this 289 has similar sound to the CMS/gameblaster. very cool!
