Holy moly I didn't realise I'd not been here for so long that I had to trawl through seventy pages of purchases to catch up. The coolest thing I saw was the monstrous Soviet XT clone thing, closely followed by the 8-bit PAS, the Toshiba T1200 and the GUSes hidden among other boards. Artex is not included much in the way that they made DJ Qbert a judge of the DMC champs when he kept winning. 😉

Roommate of a friend of a friend was getting rid of some stuff and I thought I was getting maybe 4 old PCs and ended up with about 10 computers, a bunch of networking/windows books, and a box of mixed cards. Scrapped most of the Pentium 4 stuff and kept 5 PCs. I think I got a pretty good haul. Lot of ISA ethernet, video, and sound cards.

Well, couldn't not buy this lot - got involved in discussion on P75 Vs P66. Problem is that they're rarely compared with the same chipset, let alone similar BIOS and settings. Now, I already have an Asus PCI/I-P5SP4 So4 board. What turned up last week:

Yep, an Asus PCI/I-P54SP4, i.e. exactly the same chipset and board, just with a big 5V-3.3V regulator and So5 instead. Will need to sort out the missing BIOS and undoubtedly dead RTC, but with a bit of luck benchmarking will soon commence 😀

Edit: BIOS not missing, I just need my eyes checking.

2. Dell Precision 420 with One 1G/133 Slot 1 and a Slot 1 terminator. Seems to be an RDRAM board?

Unfortunately I now have the Queen song 'All Dead, All Dead' in my head. PCI/I-P54SP4 dead, P3C-E dead - and the TNT PCI sometimes works, sometimes not (might just be bad PCI contacts) 🙁

Working on the P54SP4, but no science to be done until medicine (or rather: necromancy) succedes...

The Precision 420 motherboard is not just any RDRAM board, it's one of the few with the Intel i840 dual-channel chipset, which makes it one of the fastest P3 boards out there.

nice, but that P2B-DS sure needs a dusting off ^^

No terminators (CT-RIMMs) but will require continunity (C-RIMMs) if you only intend to use a single RIMM per channel.

This controller arrived today -

HoneyBee Competition Pro CD32 Controller. Purchased to use with my Amiga 1200 and it's working great. Not a lot of games support more than 2 buttons, but it's worked with pretty much everything I've thrown at it. All buttons working fine in CD32 games like Gloom & Alien Breed 3D for example.

I figured if I was going to get a CD32 compatible controller, I may as well go for a good one rather than the crappy official one.

I like how easy it is to change modes with the Select button and the mode to remap Up to the 2nd button is quite useful. Though I think for most 1 button games I'll probably stick to using my Cruiser Joystick.

I have a thing for Intel boards, and this one is a fairly complete version: an onboard Yamaha XG chip and support for Coppermine chips. Technically, I could put one of mine SL4KL 1GHz Pentium IIIs into this thing and get a very fast system, but I feel like a more classic Windows 98 build would be more suitable. Something like a Pentium 3@500, a Matrox G250, Voodoo 2 SLI with a SoundBlaster 16.

The onboard Yamaha chip should have SB-Link enabled (called PC-PCI link in the manual), and I'd like to mess around with PowerYMF drivers and soundbanks.

I also got a Yamaha DB50XG daughterboard (pictured here together with my SW60XG card) — it will be paired with my SB16 CT2230. Playing some games with it right now and loving it.

EUR 20 well spent, just the Voodoo or Tseng would be worth a multiple of that. Like the Intel TC430HX, particularly as it has the Yamaha audio chip. Less like for the PC Chips M741LMRT - possibly the worst motherboard I ever had to run my main system on. Pig-slow, bad drivers and too many stability issues.

EUR 35 for a working Seattle with other stuff too sounds like a very reasonable price. As for whether it's worth it if you have too much useless stuff piled up... I know the feeling - that's one you need to decide yourself 😉

Problem is that starting with 800 MHz, Intel went from 100 MHz FSB to 133 MHz (800 MHz P3 was available in both versions). BX isn't meant for FSB >100 MHz, even if some mainboards allow overclocking. So if you want 1 GHz, you need to install a 1.33 GHz one, as you need a CPU with a 10x multiplier.
