A little update.
I have tried a lot of drivers.
12.46 is still the fastest driver.

I have done a lot of cfg tweaking in quake 3 and some write combining tweaking.
My fps in quake 3 have now reached a wooping 96 frames per second in demo four.
I have also aquired a Geforce 256 DDR, that card pushed the fps a tad further. 98 fps.

If I turn of the sound in Quake3 Im getting 168 frames per second. But I cant play quake3 on a RetroLan without sound.

Do you have a PCI sound card you could try?

If I remember correctly from back in the day, ISA sound cards can kill performance compared to PCI sound cards. A Sound Blaster Live! / Audigy / Audigy 2 would be good choices for games in Windows. An Aureal Vortex 2 would also probably be fine.

I really should test that again (ISA vs PCI sound cards) since that was a really long time ago when PCI sound cards first came out.

I have tried a couple of different sound cards. Both PCI and ISA cards.
I stubled across this video and decided to try the awe card. And the AWE card is the fastest so far
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC01uiyuJxI&t=1235s
Go to 7:33 and see the scores in quake 3.

I have also tried alot of different network cards. So far the INTEL card has been the fastest. It beats every 3com an Realtek card I have tried.
A friend of mine discovered the ADM tech card were crasy fast. Some day in the future I am going to test the same card he has.

One thing that is funny is how much faster Quake3 runs without a sound card. Im getting around 60 more frames per second without a sound card.
That got me thinking, about the sample based GUS sound card. I wonder If it is possible to get Quake3 to run on the GUS.
If I have understood it correctly, when a game have support for the GUS and it uses the samples, the card does all the sounds itself and doesent use your computers
cpu at all.....

That should give a big FPS boost if it were possible. But I doubt there is a patch for Quake3 that lets the GUS work that way

Interesting that you say that sound card does not eat CPU performance.
All my K6 adventures shows that a sound card really hurts performance 🙁
We need someone to test this, I do not have such a sound card.

Last time I tested I was getting about 73fps in Q3

I think that you must have misunderstood me.
When I have a AWE64 sound card in my computer, im getting around 96 fps in demo four in Quake3.
Without a soundcard I got 168 fps in demo four.

Awe 64 is by far the fastest soundcard ive tried. I have tried a SB live CT8370. Sound blaster 16. A yamaha OPL3 card. And a SB live SB0200.
According to phils video. Awe 64 is the fastest. And I could only agree

Im getting around 75 to 85 fps with the other sound cards

Hehe.. What systems specs do you want me to test with.

Motherboard will be an ASUS P5A-B

What CPU? I have pretty much whatever. By default I would use a K6-2+ or K6-3+

What soundcards?

I can test stock and overclocked speeds.

I think a few different scenarios need to be tested. I’m not sure PCI is always a winner depending on how much is put on the PCI bus - for example if you have a PCI videocard. In that situation I think having sound card and network card on the ISA bus might be better. I could be way wrong, I’d love to see some numbers. Obviously if using an AGP card, then PCI peripherals are probably better.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

Please test with a similar cpu.

Do you have a Audigy 2 ZS?
Phil recently made a video about it

Phil tested a lot of cards in this video as well

Ok.
I do have an Audigy 2 ZS..

I don't have a GeForce 256 DDR though. One of the cards that keeps evading me.

Not sure if I have a PCI Gb nic or not.

All my regular P5A boards are dead... So P5A-B it is. I could also test with an MVP3 based board as well.

Awesome. Use win98 with ALi driver 1.82, Nvidia driver 7.76 and CPU speed some overclock you feel is stable, 112x5,5 should be stable.
Sound cards you can use what you have.

I forgot about this thread.
I did some serious tweaking with the Quake 3:s game files. I compressed all the textures and sounds, and removed unnecessary stuff.
I also got my hand of a geforce 256 DDR.

Then I broke the 100fps barrier! 😀

Well. Without any tweaks and with vanilla Quake3 I got around 35 frames per second with a voodoo3 3000 and at 550mhz. Then I worked my way up to 100 frames per second.
Trying out different graphics card. The greatest performance booster is my Autoexec.cfg file that doubles the frame rate in Quake3

I think I used the 7.76 *12.46 detonator driver and the ALI 2.08 Agp driver

Edit: Sorry! I got it wrong

And here is the latest cfg file. This config file doubles the frame rate.

Spoiler

//

Anyone up for the challenge?
Please beat my score! I dare you! 😀

Please do it with a sound card. Without a sound card I am getting 168 frames per second
