I have made some progress browsing HTTPS websites using Netscape Navigator 3.04. Can be useful for other old browsers too. I found out that by using a HTTP web-proxy browsing many HTTPS websites is possible, even with acces to their search-functions (of cause all javascript-functionality fails in NN3.04). Even visiting YouTube is possible, although Netscape didn't deliver a HTML5-plugin smiley. But pictures are shown (most of them).

Finding good web-proxies compatible with NN3.04 was a difficult task. I have tested more than hundred web-proxies I found on public lists. Many of them didn't like the browser signature, gave only a blank page, or didn't load other websites (well). With most of the EIGHT remaining web-proxies its possible to use HTTPS-only search-machines, visit reddit, wikipedia, microsoft, github, msdn and even msfn. The Wayback-machine is partly usable: searching for phrases is working, searching archived websites not (javascript!). Also websites crashing NN3.04 is less often.

I did some simple speedtests, loading by web-proxy a smaller website, a larger website and some http-downloading:

A. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River
B. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List ... idge_spans
C. http://speedstest.tele2.net/100MB.zip

Loadtime in seconds, downloadspeed in KB/sec."*" means "didn't finish loading".

Qemu 14 - Windows 98-ME-NT4
(Requires modification of qemu .exe files to use Qemu v14 on the above listed operating systems)

Tested System Rescue CD v2.0.1 on 98-ME-NT4 using Firefox v3 on 11-16-2011

Also tested with Tiny Core Linux v4.0.2 using Chrome on 11-16-2011

Any Linux OS that works in Qemu should work but keep in mind memory limitations of the host and host processor speed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweigh ... stribution

Latest Qemu doesn't support KQemu. Check older versions of qemu and/or vmware and vpc.

Qemu Manager v7.0 works on 98-ME-NT4 (with KQEMU for hardware acceleration)
(Need to hexedit qemu.exe and replace "freeaddrinfo". "getaddrinfo", and "getnameinfo" with "gethostname". (May be able to use KernelEX for 98/ME instead of doing this)
Also may need to change in the VM options to change "Main Display" to "Qemu Window".

Tested with Tiny Core Linux v4.0.2 using Chrome on 11-16-2011.

Either Dual-boot with Linux, or use a LiveCD. Using Qemu on 9x\NT4 on older machines is not ideal due to older processors and memory.

I wanted to provide an update for anyone who is suffering through the Chromium 54 wifi disconnects when searching on XP. After about four dozen disconnects, I couldn't stand it anymore. I stopped using Chromium 54 entirely for the slower Firefox 52 ESR. To get my wifi back, I'd have to eject my wifi PCMCIA card and reinsert it.

Just now, though, I found a fix. I switched the default search engine in Chromium from Google to Yahoo! Canada and the disconnections have stopped. I know what you're thinking - Yahoo!, are they still around? Yahoo! has been historically slow to upgrade their technology. Anyway, its good enough for me.

Okay, updated the 98-ME browsers. Seems like Opera and Retrozilla are the best to browser the modern web on these operating systems unless I'm missing something. Obviously not as ideal as any current browser on 2000+ but better than the alternatives. TLS 1.1/1.2 backported to Firefox 11 and SeaMonkey 2.8 would be nice.

Tested HTTPSProxy on Windows 2000 with qutebrowser and it fixed the cert issues. This will likely work for Chrome browsers as well where Chrome relies on the OS to provide TLS 1.1/1.2 which 2000 does not.

Tested
qutebrowser 0.10.1
Slimjet 10
Advanced Chrome
Chromium
Google Chrome
Opera 38
Vivaldi

Httpsproxy works as a server as well. Hosted it on another machine and pointed a Windows 98 Opera 11.10 machine to it in proxy settings and imported the httpsproxy cert to root certs.

Also tested with Retrozilla 2.1 on NT 3.51 and it worked.

Looks like newer versions of 7-zip may require kernelex and older versions may not be compatible with newer 7z formats on 9x. Need to do more testing but I've run into this the last couple of days.
It's possible it's just the GUI and the CLI 7-zip works fine but right-click extract is nice to use.

Possible reason why Retrozilla TLS or Firefox 2.x not working in 3.51 could be SP3 installed instead of SP5. Can't install SP5 due to vmware BSOD even on clean install of 3.51..... At least I know Retrozilla works on NT 3.51 SP3 tho so that's good news as well as DOSBox. Need to check with pcem.

Check using Links in Windows 3.1/ NT 3.1-5.50 command prompt and web render proxy for opers 3.62 and OS <2000.

The DOS ver of Links 2.18 works well in NT 3.51 Command Prompt, just one problem unable to access the network. heh
