Hi all,
I'm running a 486DX-4, SBpro2 and Roland MT32. I'm trying to get Ultima Underworld 2 running smoothly. It keeps crashing. I create a new character and move around for a bit and it either crashes when I'm saving ( it deletes saved games) or when I see Lord British. I've tried only using SBPro2 for sound and music no Roland. I've tried using MS Emm386 instead of QEMM, but still the same crashes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob

Have you tried completely disabling sound and music in the game, i.e. running the setup/installation program and selecting "NONE" for both options? That should tell you whether the crash is sound-related or not.

I do remember it not being the most stable game. I also do remember having crash issues when talking to Lord British even on normal 386 hardware back then. I also remember being forced to restart playing the game because of getting stuck because of bugs. I don't remember exactly how I got past these problems because it has been over 25 years, but I know that some of the problems were fixed in cd-rom version.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I'll try and hunt down a copy of the CDROM version. I own the original floppy disk version. Not sure what version mine is. I found a patch out there but it seems to screw my graphics when applied so I gather its not for my version of the game.

You first need to patch game to latest version, then you can patch playability patches.

I've tried this patch scrolls patch by itself and I get a garbled screen. I then patched the patch scrolls patch with the new patch via the website. Still get garbled images as in the screenshots below. Very strange.

I put the files in my UW2 directory overwriting the original ones.

Think it could be a compatibility issue with my graphics card? Strange it seems to be the patch that does it.

The FAQ mentions this:

Local Bus Video
Some cards (NCR chipset as shipped with current ZEOS machines, some
DELL on-board VGA's) seem to have problems getting the palette. We use a VGA
port-based palette load technique to get around problems on some clones with
BIOS techniques. It seems these on-board cards need port input slowed down to
work correctly. On some this is due to cards missing outs due to the lack of
wait states. We have put a patch in (replacing "rep outsb" with "slow: outsb,
loop slow" for you assembly programmers) which works on the DELL we have here.
Hopefully it will work on other cards as well, but we don't own one of every
machine made, so cannot promise. As we hear of particular problems, we will
attempt to find/buy the hardware and patch it as well.

edit: I jsut read its referring to onboard cards. Mine is not onboard. So guess it does not apply.

I just tested both the original 3.5" Floppy release and the CD-ROM UUW 1&2 CD release and I was able to Save the game, Speak to Lord British, then save the game again without problems on both versions.

I'm running a Pentium 90 with DOS 7.1 and QEMM (Latest Version) it has a PCI Mach 64 with 2MB of ram (I think its a Mach 64).

Just dropping this here to hopefully give some comparison.

Right... The plot thickens. It must be something to do with my hardware. I create a new character, go straight to LB and click on all the speech. I get dumped out to dos with the error: Underworld can no longer run: Error code E002.

I've tried disabling things in the bios just in case. I am using a Roland MPU-401 and 8bit card and a real Roland MT32. Everything else is normal. Soundblaster Pro 2. I've tried with QEMM and with normal EMS. My kit is 486DX-4-100 and a Trident 1BM PCI graphics card. Darn strange what is causing the crashing..

I do have an MT32 and Roland MPU but I don't have them hooked up right now to test for you. I really need to get my act together and build an add-on to my desk so I can run the Mt32, Sc55 Mk][, and Mixing board under my CRT so I can use those things again. I don't think this is going to happen soon enough for your info though...

i guess something is wrong with patching/patches or the Mach64 is incombatible.
Can you try a other Videocard ?

How much RAM does the machine have? Are you sure it's 100% working?

Yep, I've done loads of tests with Norton 8 and Checkit. All tests come out good. I'm going to try changing the graphics card for another and see if there is a problem with the Trident. I'll keep you posted.

RAM is 16MB, Just changed video card and I get the same garbled video pallet with the patched version. I'm going to rebuild this PC's hardware with another board as there is another problem I have on the VCFED.org forums:
