Hi guys,

I have piling my SC-55, MU-80, etc. all the equipment piling up on my desk. However, I would actually like to install them all on some sort of an open rack so that they look nicer and more organized and don't move when I press buttons or plug in and out cables.

I saw today this video from LGR:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEMqLmqsLaQ&t=315s

In minute 4:48 he is showing a rack on his that which actually looks pretty nice. Do you guys know how those racks are called and where I can find this kind of racks?

Thx!

Huh... that looks like a little 2-post rack or a wall mount network equipment rack that he just set on his desk.

You can buy rack posts by themselves so you can make whatever you want.

what you're looking for is a rack shelf, while there is one specific for the roland devices (roland rad-50 for example) you can just use any usually.
the rack itself is just a normal 19" rack.

Ah I see... and do you know, how I can manage to mount my SC-55 etc. on tha wall mount? Is there some special sort of mounting stuff?

There are many types of rack cases/ enclosures. They all have standardised widths. They can be mounted on walls, desks and left on the floor.

Look for 'audio racks'.

The height of equipment to install is standardised aswell. They are measured in units of ' U'. For example, 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U etc.

So for a typicall Roland SC55 desktop unit, it would measure 1U in height, and half-width in width.

What you need is a 1U half- rack adapter to add to an audio rack unit. Then mount an sc55 into it, for example.

Most professional gear however are standard widths, not half-width, but mostly vary in U heights, typically 1-4 U.

EDIT: 19" audio racks, specifically.

Lots of places to get those. I have two 4U audio racks on my retro desk supporting a plank with monitors. I bought mine ("Millennium Steel Box 4") here:
https://www.thomann.de/intl/studio_racks.html

Thomann ships all over Europe, elsewhere shipping probably becomes an issue, but there will be similar shops.

You can get steel shelves that bolt into a rack for stuff that isn't standard width.

Roland SC and Yamaha MU series were rack-mountable by default. But you need the base plate which was attached to the unit's bottom to rack-mount them.

When using a rack-mount shelf, however, it's no issue.

This is a very nice theme.

From the top:

Yamaha MU50
Roland Sound Canvas SC55
Roland Sound Canvas SC88
Roland CM64
Roland MT32

What type of rack do i need for the above 5 units? On desk, not on wall or floor.

its standard 19" rack stuff. amazon, ebay, everyon sells it. you just need some rackshelves to sit the midi modules on since they are half width.

I see that there are lot of 19" racks but i think is not that simple depending the stuff someone owns of course. I have 5 devices with different dimensions. The Roland Sound Canvas SC55 and the Yamaha MU50 seem to have the same width and height so they can be put the one next to the other. The Roland Sound Canvas SC88 is higher. Roland MT32 and Roland CM64 have bigger width than canvas. It seems that the width of the 19" rack is 49cm. Unfortunately i cannot put other device next to the Roland CM64 or Roland MT32.

well.. of course. the mt32 is not a rackable device. sc88 is what, 2u tall instead of 1u. some things are just not designed to be racked (mt32/cm64 etc).

you just put them on a shelf on their own as either 1u or 2u tall and it is what it is.

also keep in mind that the MT-32 does not fit in a single rack height unit, it's a little bit taller, the SC88 is 1.5u high, so you could solve that by having the MT-32 on a shelf offset above the SC88, so make sure to get a rack with offset holes, so 3 mounting holes per rack unit on each side.

same probably goes for the CM-64, but I don't have one of those unfortunately, so I can't tell you for sure, but you can just stack the CM-64 and MT-32 on a single shelf then.
