Hi all,
With me running into a wall at full speed trying to get my YMF744 card working in my Tualatin machine -- it's great under Windows 98SE, but DOS stuff just plain doesn't work no matter what I do (boils down to lack of DDMA on the 815EP rev2 chipset or SB-link support on my board) -- I reached out to a friend who was looking to get rid of some stuff anyway since he's being made to move as his lease is up. From him I have a rev 0.4 Epox EP-61BXA-M board coming (as well as a K8N board but that's a story for another day...) and I was wondering about maybe getting a Coppermine CPU working on it. I've already ordered a slotket (MS-6905 v2) and I've already got a couple candidates in mind, but I'm a little confused since I read something about Tualatin-compatible slotkets only working on rev 0.5 or higher of this board. Is that just for those Tualatin-compatible slotkets or am I going to run into issues trying to run Coppermine too? I don't need to be able to push 133FSB -- though it'd be nice if I can since I have one of the last AGP cards that play nice with that, apparently -- I just need to not be stuck with Klamath/Deschutes/Katmai. Maybe I need a BIOS update? If so, does anyone know where I might find that?
The CPUs I've got in mind for this thing are the classic Pentium III 1000EB (1000/256/133) and a Celeron 1000 (1000/128/100). I imagine the PIII has a locked multiplier so if I try to run it, it'll be at 750MHz unless I get really lucky. The Celeron however has a higher multiplier -- but at 1GHz, with a 100MHz FSB I doubt the cache is going to hurt it any worse than the FSB will. I toyed with the idea of getting a PIII 1000/256/100 but that'd be useless unless the Celeron will work as well... again, I'm remembering issues with multipliers...
I vaguely remember having issues with the SE440BX-2 out of my Dell XPS T600r to the effect of not being able to use CPUs with multipliers higher than 8.5x, but it did support Coppermine... did you need a certain stepping of the 440BX chipset to support that? I'm a little wary since I saw dates from 1998 when I looked at reviews for this board.
Either way, I didn't pay a ton for it, so if it won't work that way I'll be disappointed but it won't sink all my dreams or anything. I suppose in that event I'll have to manage my expectations a bit more -- cross some games off the list, mostly post-2001 titles -- and try to get ahold of as fast a Katmai CPU as I can find.
