This is weird, I installed System Shock 2 on my W98 system and knew from the get go something was up. Firstly it
kept wanted to install in the c:\games dir but I steered it towards c:\program files instead thinking all was well.

Nope! The install put it in the c:\games dir anyway and now come to find out all my apps/games in the program files
dir are gone, even the msinfo32.exe tool won't work. System Shock indeed! Has anyone encountered this before?

Luckily a lot my games were NOT in the program files dir and all work ok. Everything else seems to work fine except
the msinfo32 tool which I did use the SFC tool to try and restore it but no go, think it needs other files to go with it
but don't know yet what they are. Is there a way to do a "lite" restore in win98? May be better off doing a full wipe?

I do remember there being an issue with some games and a bug in the installshield uninstaller. Very rarely did anyone install their games in Program files and even rarer is people uninstalling their games instead of just deleting them so it wasn't noticed muched.

IIRC you can copy the game folder off the CD.

This is a weird request but would help me quite a bit. If anyone could look in their w98 sys and check out their program files\common files\microsoft shared\msinfo dir
and list the files there besides msinfo32.exe. I need to restore those files as misinfo isn't working but don't know what they are.

Leileilol, you just made my day, thanks! Now I just need to go into system file checker and restore the files.

Crap. Thought for sure restoring those files it would work but msinfo32.exe still bringing up that blank screen saying some files are
missing or whatever. Anyone know what other files it's dependent on that reside in other directories?

I found an installer for the win95 16bit version of msinfo, but finding the 32bit win98 version is proving elusive so far. Maybe I need
to just get it over with and reinstall the OS.

I think you need to register these files with regsvr32

How do you go about doing that? Never messed with regsvr32 before, thanks!

If the you put the files back to were they were, I don't think you need to re-register them (unless the Installshield installer/uninstaller unregistered them) .
The syntax to register is
regsvr32.exe [path to .dll file]

That being said, if your games are going to have to be re-installed anyway, why not just re-install Windows as well ?

You might want to consider backing up your Windows partition to minimize the impact of any future system shocks .

Trust me on this, if you want to ask anything related to System Shock or System Shock 2, then you should ask at:

https://www.systemshock.org/index.php

It's a small forum, with not too many members, but it's a friendly place, with some people who seem to know *everything* about the games and the way they run.

They also have some very good mods and fan missions, and whether this is your first time playing System Shock 2, or your eleventh, you really should install the mods listed here:

https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4447.0

which enhance and properly balance the game without changing the feel of the game too much.

The fan-made remake of the original System Shock, called Citadel, is now in beta testing, so hopefully the full release won't be too long now:

https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=6977.0

Thankfully, Night Dive Studios, who own the System Shock rights and who are making their own official System Shock remake, allowed Citadel to continue, and the bloke who's making Citadel has done a really amazing job, and stuck rigidly to the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it philosophy. Ignore the screenshots and videos in the above thread, though, they are *way* out of date.
