Hello all.

I have a main retro system that I use.
Specs are as follows:
Biostar M5ATA with mod for 2.4v cpu.
128mb ram installed as 1 stick.
AMD k6-3 400mhz (66x6)
Yamaha MF-719 ISA soundcard.

Previously I have this system working fine with S3 virge DX 4mb. I wanted to add something more interesting and closer to 1999 spec.
A kind member from another forum donated an Nvidia Vanta PCI, I also had one already but considered it broken as it was acting like I am about to describe:

The cards will boot fine without drivers and windows 98 will just install the standard VGA driver. The system is still fine at this point.
Once the drivers have been installed. The card is detected properly and the system is restarted with the new drivers the system will hang just as you would normally expect to see the desktop. A single CTRL ALT DEL will restart the PC.
I have tried around 5 or more different drivers.
I have noticed both GPUs get very hot to the touch if you leave them on the black screen.

I did also try a geforce 6200 and the behaviour was the same.

I was hoping someone here would be able to offer any advice how to try and fix it or explain why this is not compatible.

I will note I have tested all 3 cards on another PC (with windows XP) and all 3 are fine.

Cheers

Lewis

I had a similar experience with a different motherboard and a whole bunch of PCI video cards (S3 Savage 4, GeForce 2MX etc). My best guess is that the motherboard doesn't provide enough power.

That sounds reasonable. The motherboard was not intended to run a 400mhz cpu. so 1999+ hardware might be asking too much.
