From Windows 98 screens in 1024x768 with a perfect image to MS-DOS gaming in VGA, everything is fine !

Here is a first result, i think its perfect for this price :

I just used a cheap HDMI H264 encoder ($30), the video quality is even better than that you can watch on youtube of course !

Interesting! And it's so cheap (even the ones I found in Australia that look to be the same thing) that it's worth grabbing one just to find out for myself. Thanks for the update!

Be careful with appearances. I bought 2 identical looking ones to that a few years back and they never worked at all . There may well be different variants with identical casings .

Yeah, it's always hard to tell. The one I found has the same enclosure etc but is not 100% identical. For $12 it's worth the punt. I've gambled on much more expensive ones and lost.

I had got this :

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TNZP9G3

because there was a review saying that someone was able to see a BIOS screen with it, but no it does not work with DOS and BIOS screen on older computers.

I need to find something "reasonable" priced that works, unfortunately it seems like everything that people recommend is ether no longer being sold or costs more than $100.

Some POST and/or BIOS screens on some boards use 640x480 at 60Hz .

I can't abort! It's too late! Haha.

Mine will find use either way and it'll be interesting to see how it compares.

Sorry ! I never thought about this laptop passing by the VGA 70hz modes, it is so strange ! Never saw that on another computer.
The good thing is this laptop might be the perfect one to play and capture MS-DOS games 😀

I like my Extron RGB-DVI 300 , now that it's setup properly. I have a question, though . Did you need to configure theunit manually for 720x400@70Hz and 320x200@70Hz input (was it pre-configured by the previous owner)? Auto config. did not work for me, but once I manually input values for those resolutions, everything worked perfectly

Hi !
When i got the 300A, some settings were a bit curious, the display was not exactly right.
So i did a factory reset, then select 1080P for output resolution and but HDMI data ON to have sound, with a Auto config before.
And its near perfect 😉

can you share your settings please ?

My little cheapie arrived. I tested it on my 48" 4k TV. Glad to see everything display at the correct aspect ratio without having to make adjustments.

  • The image scaling does add a little softness (it would be unresonable to expect more at this price of course). It would bother me if I was sitting up close in front of a monitor, but on the TV when I'm back on the couch, it's less of an issue.
  • Feeding it from my 386 system (with Tseng ET4000AX video card) there is some noise in the black display
  • Otherwise, everything I ran under DOS displayed well. In some games there are a few pixels cut off at right or bottom.
  • It displays BIOS

I also tried it with my Windows 98 box. Similar results, but less noisy image.

Verdict: As a quick VGA to HDMI solution, this thing was $12 well spent - for TV gaming IMO. For a desktop monitor I would be a lot fussier.

I can barely read the text on the chip, but I think it is: AG02-EX 1842

I'm actually a bit ignorant when it comes to refresh rates in DOS. What's the best way for me to test this?

If you're using a true VGA card (an ET4000 i believe ?), just launch and try to play Doom or Descent or whatever DOS game using VGA mode 😉
