I'm using version 0.65 to try to run Little Big Adventure, and run into the following.

First I get this fading white screen, which I guess is a normal start for the game (never played it before). The I get this textual screen about initialising sound and video devices. This then fades out. At this point a midi starts, and I assume it's supposed to be accompanied by a starting screen for the game of some sort. Instead, I get the initialising devices screen back again, and can't do anything from there.

I'm not playing the CD-Rom version (I think). It's the one you can get at the-underdogs.info.

I searched but didn't find this problem posted here already.

It seems to assume the CD version. Doesn't work for me anyway.
What's wrong with that site? It doesn't offer any game that's still in the market. In that case there's only info.

Don't know if it's legal, but nobody really cares. The author of the game said he'd want you to download it if you're going to buy Little Big Adventure 3. So might as well just get an ISO from a filesharing network (just as illegal as downloading the rip from the underdogs).
