Transfering large files from modern to 486 with a 1.44 mb disk

Goal: transport files, archives that won't fit in a 1.44 mb diskette from a modern Win10 machine to my 486.

Why: an IDE-CF converter is on its way in the next weeks, so this is just a stopgap measure. No, I don't have a CD Drive on the 486, no I don't have a network card either.

I used to do this back in the day with a 386. There was some utility that could archive directories, including recursively and make them into chunks that fit 1.44 disks. You needed the utility on the target machine to reconstruct it/extract it. The problem here is that I don't remember the name of such a utility (I'm not sure PKZIP can do it, but I'm not certain either) and running it on the modern machine might require running it in an emulated environment.

My questions are:

1) What is the name of the program you use to do this
2) am I forced to use it in dosbox/alternatives

You could also investigate some sort of serial connection if you've got the hardware for that. It'll be slow but way less cumbersome once it works. It should be possible to use serial file transfer software from DosBox on your new machine.

HJSplit is a popular utility
I use rar in these cases, the windows/modern side can create backwards compatible multi-part files and on the retro side even the dos version has a nice gui to easily decompress them without searching for the correct parameters.

Do you have a link to the dos version of hjsplit? All I'm seeing are Indonesian windows apps.

There is a DOS version of 7-zip. It works the same as the command line version on any other OS.

World's foremost 486 enjoyer.

Also you are right, it's getting more and more difficult to find these things

I would have thought using something like winrar to create the archive files, then unzip or unrar on the DOS side. Industry standard means you can't go wrong.
