Suse Linux 7.3 was my first introduction to Linux and I really loved it

SuSE Linx 4.4.1 was my first introduction to linux - all those disks - and the learning path from ipfwadmin to ipchains to iptables ... netfilter... fond memories.

Good times. My parents bought me the full size 7.3 box with all the CDs and two huge books for Christmas when I was in 6th grade. I had a blast learning it and for 3 years it was the main os for the household as well.

My introduction to Linux was Slackware 3.4. I moved on to RedHat 5.2 in 1998, then stuck with RedHat through 6.x. In the early 2000s I tried several Linux distros but never stuck with one. SuSe was one such distro I tried but it never grew on me, I do not remember why. I still have a boxed copy of SuSe Linux 7.3 Professinal I believe.

EDIT: Yes I do, but I can't find a photo of that. I also have a boxed copy of SuSe Linux 8.0 Professional as well, I have photos of that one:

PC-Su-SE-Linux-8-0.jpg

I wonder which of the two is a better install for a 2000/2001 system..

The Birds are back.
I use to have some ViewSonic CRT monitors back in the 1990’s.
And I really liked them. They served me well.
So when I saw this one I just had to have it.
Its a 17” LCD that works with both PC and MAC.

This is a catch up post, all these cards have been bought over the last four months or so, most recent was the Radeon HD 5870, I'm not even that comfortable about putting these buys here as I'm using these cards in my daily driver machines, so yes they are kinda old, but I'm using them for modern day mainstream usage, however the newest of them is from 2009 so I guess it's OK. The 5870 is in my Phenom II daily driver, the 4770 and 3870 were bought to use in my HP Proliant ML 115 G5 Opteron 1354 daily driver but the 3870 ran too hot for my liking(70c on desktop, 75C under load, even after a service and new thermal paste(apparently this is normal)) and the 4770 had monitor detection issues with the Sharp LCD I use on that machine(but it did get used in the Phenom for a while happily till I got the 5870).

As my HP Proliant ML 115 G5 is so picky about graphics cards(it so far has only run properly with a Geforce 6800(NV 41) card). I bought this PNY Geforce 9600 GT off fleabay. hopefully it'll work OK, it obviously needs a full clean out and service, poor thing looks choked with dust.

I've got my new "cooler master Wavemaster case " today, but it came incomplete and I am sad and desperate, cause I looked for it so long 🙁

Building my own PCs since 1991 - for my retro builds it's "no CF-disks, no Floppy emulators, no modern cases etc.", only the real and authentic stuff whenever possible.

I bought these two computers and CD ROM with floppy for 20 EUR. I didn't know what I was buying exactly, because the seller provided poor photos. However I didn't want to ask the seller for additional photos, not to draw too much attention from other potential buyers 😀

For the AT computer, I had only the picture of the backside of the computer in very low resolution, and I was hoping to get a 486 system. In a way, unfortunately, it turned up to be a Socket 7 system with 166Mhz CPU with Intel motherboard, and all the components which I assumed they were (based on the poor photo), where actually only add-ons connectors from motherboard. Even the graphics was integrated. Well, the system works and I'm glad I got it for mere 10 EUR. I have a few of these AT cases, but what I like about this one the most, is that it isn't yellowed that much as the others. The picture from integrated graphics is blurry, but works fine when inserted a PCI VGA card. I don't like Intel BIOS that much, but luckily I can disable cache on this one.

As for the higher AT Compaq case, the seller took a poor picture of the front from a few metres. I was hoping to get somewhat Pentium/Celeron III system, but the front sticker indicates, that it could be Pentium II. It came without power supply, no disk and no RAM. The computer turns on, but doesn't post. No beeps. I've tried with different RAM's (only one slot) but no success. Maybe it would work with two slots of RAM? I'll try removing and reinserting the CPU. The PCI Graphics card is interesting. I've never seen so much cables coming from a card before. I removed the card from this system, just to try it on another, but no picture. Maybe I'm missing something here...

Today I received very interesting packages

Firsth thing first, this brand new 1990 game :
LbYtYBtl.jpg
Nl7Kl8Jl.jpg
kqnoHkvl.jpg

Well ... the box has been crushed, so I won't feel bad opening it ^^

It's open
zN4cW0Kl.jpg

Its content:
p7UTSkwl.jpg
I haven't tested the disks yet, but I hope they work 😁

Here are some flyers
bCj5OzZl.jpg
ggzirDll.jpg
And finally the manual !
CKkPDrul.jpg
caQK0KKl.jpg

The box really has seen better days ...
NhhpCHll.jpg
xlUXqbYl.jpg
I think I'll open it entiery (unglue it), put it underneath a stack of books and then reinforce it with thick paper inside. I did this with my MS-DOS 4.01 box which coudln't even hold its content properly and couldn't stay upright anymore ; now it stays upright properly, stays closed and just look much better ...

I like the screenshot that looks a lot like (and probably is) a photo of a CRT ^^
TUYIALjl.jpg?1

And here's the second package
qoWSpvOl.jpg

Two 286 (the icl has a 16MHz and the Tandon a 12MHz) to fix

I tested the ICL and it works, except for the HDD and the battery
As for the tandon ...

XFzEgdKl.jpg
Uh oh ...

This battery is ... EXTRA THICC
XwJXdfnl.jpg

The mobo is in a poor condition ...
QGSHopal.jpg

And the case has been better days too because of it
YUU67BSl.jpg
Wmeibk9l.jpg
0EEJhUpl.jpg
hmmm it's gonna be fun to clean up this mess ...

Pshhhhhh
dhyx7qql.jpg

Whoops the 33Ohms resistor broke
UWdTv4kl.jpg

The KBC's socket is SOL
L44AvkOl.jpg

And pshhhh again
xh4kg03l.jpg

I cleaned the case entirely, I first applied vinegar everywhere (like on the photo), then scrubbed, then I used steel wool to finish it up, then I rinced it in the shower ... i'm going to let it dry outside for a day.

I'll try to clean the motherboard later, but I feel like it's going to be long and annoying to fix 🙁

Nice machines! Need a lot of work though 🤯

"286SX" 😆

Is the HDD a WD93044? They generally sound quite awful...

The case on the right is definitely worth your 10 euros, especially as it seems to have a Mhz LED display. 👍

How come you obscured the case badge on the picture though?

Hups...I agreed on an acceptable price for 3 boxes with more than 30 kg in total... 😒 There was at least one interesting card in each, therefore I will take only some few items and sell the remaining parts again asap. 1 sellers pic of each box...

It's a WD93048-AD
I don't hate their sound to be honest ^^

I've tried to get it running, but the heads didn't move, despite all my efforts to lubricate them and some help I gave them. Maybe the circuit has a problem ...

Hehe, didnt you see them..? The last one was the most important. Again, Ebay didnt accept my offer or my connection was gone. I was really lucky there was no bidder at all. Therefore I contacted the seller and bought all 3......
