Dunno why it doesn't work in XP, but AFAIK it won't work in DOSBox (protected mode).

DOSBox is a x86+DOS emulator.

Might wanna try the cd32 amiga version, should be downloadable from a certain site on the net. That runs fine here.

From Microsoft's knowledge articles:Beneath a Steel Sky uses a memory model not compatible with Windows 95. Run it in MS-DOS mode., which suggests that it is using some unusual memory "tricks" to work.

Do a quick search of the board with "Beneath a Steel Sky", especially:

"Back to the Roots" has a freely downloadable 32-Color CD32 version than runs well in WinUAE.

There's a better 256-color version that is basically identical to the PC version, but it's neither freely downloadable nor easy to find (very rare apparently).

Read this thread for ideas on Touche:

On "Touche", I presume you're referring to "Touche': The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer".

Two things to check.

1) Does it do the same thing without VDMSound (may need to reconfigure the game to test this)?

2) Is it installed on the C: drive in a directory named "TOUCHE",
C:\TOUCHE

I believe that this may be one of those games that demands that you place it in the root of your C: drive for it to work.

wouldn't it be kinda nice to get the bass cd version working under xp then, it did work under 2k rite? some of you guys should be able to fiddle a little with it 😉

i refuse to hear that something which works under 2k won't work under xp, that's lame!

BTW, you can disregard using "Touche" on DosBox as well. It uses DOS4GW (protected mode game).

According to DOSFreak's compatibility list, Tribes also works in 2000 and not in XP. But yes, sometimes it happens, and we don't always know why.

Hey... we should lobby the guys that made BASS and see if we can fenagle a 256-colour CD32 version from them. I wonder if they even have copies anymore...hmm...

Yes, it’s my fault.

well, but wasn't the problem that it didn't work on xp, but it worked on 2000? why is that? it seems only logical that there should be a way to get it to work on xp?

I'm think with Tribes that it's gotta be a video driver problem....anyways you can use OpenGlide with Tribes (although last time I check there were graphical anomalies) so that should solve the problem.

what's the difference from 2k to xp that could make such a basic dos game work with one but not the other?
