IIRC, such an exact scene does not ever take place, but I can think of a couple of spots where the components are present. The background actually looks more like the Wilderness (first level), than the Turtle Village. The Wilderness has an Amazon on a chicken-leg, then some blue thieves, and the giants with hammers at the end. However, this one looks to be more like a dragon, so it can be the beginning of level 3 (Turtle Village Part 2) - where you meet an Amazon on a dragon (with some other enemies), then blue thieves, then another couple of Amazons on foot, followed by a couple of giants with hammers.

I explored the idea today a bit more and the backround is something that got back to my mind I agree with you it's something we should pay attention. It's a bit all the same when you look at it from memory and you have to dig the subtle difference.

I did try to get to the end of the turtle village and I could not reproduce this image. Nowhere are hammer brother to be found with amazon on dragon mount, maybe they where taxing cpu too much being larger sprites. I lost some of my whit playing this game and I even forgot how to launch magic using msdos pc version. I think maybe later there is battle of hammer and amazon mounting beast going on. Maybe I can just watch a long play on youtube, here is what I got so far

I can't believe we can see all of this guy's work for free on internet. He his so amazing, my favorite about his drawing of the golden axe poster is that he use toned down colorrs and alot of details in the texture. I think that work well with the overall atmosphere of the game.

I think I found a way to reproduce the Dermot Power illustration of the game without using cheat or hack. It's when the turtle traversed you oversee and you are in the new village. You have to capture and hold a dragon at the start of the level, then if you can make it to have an amazon to follow you across the bridge when you are at the "DEB" door where some hammer bro come out ... Et voila, you have the precise moment that the artist captured in his paint.

of course, dont forget to use Ax Battler, since doing the adventure with Gilius Thunderhead is so easy it dont count

Indeed! Clever thinking. Then you need to lose the mount and hopefully the Amazon can grab it before it runs away. Of course, the blue thieves will probably not be around at this point, but we can make an argument that they are off-frame. 😁

It's RSHIFT (keypad player, default player 1) or LSHIFT (keyboard player, default player 2).

I used to play the MSDOS version as a kid, but later got more comfortable with the Genesis version via an emulator. It runs smoother and is not speed-sensitive. However, the MSDOS version has this nice ability to play as enemies or even as invulnerable bizarrians, by changing file names:

what's happening and the right of the amazon ? There seem to be a black body, a little hand and a cut limb, is it me being out of the track or what ?

@dr_st : I also prefer the pc versi... what ? you can play the enemy ? I never knew about that !!! Altho I ever only played Gilius Thunderhead since I felt it's only bastard that can really use a weapon, Ax and Thyris seem to never work for me, so I find it very difficult to try to reproduce that image.

I was also thinking of doing it on Genesis since it's the best incarnation of the game after the arcade and pc one. Then installing game genie cheat like invincibility or infinite respawn and try to find a way to see Ax Battler, hammer Brother and dragon Amazon fight togheter. I dont care that much about the background since I deem it of lesser importance.

I find it quite a paradoxal that the genesis version of golden axe was so good they made ][ and ]I[, but the amiga one was so bad we prefer not to talk about it.

The duel as I ever found it very stressful, although the music is awesome. Maybe eventually you will fight a dragon amazon and her hammer brother, I forgot the challengers list.

I think I remember using the Fabulous Furlought cracked version back then. I'll read your article with much interest, thank you for posting it.

"goldfix.zip" solves a couple of problems with the game including the insert disk 2 message.

You can just run gold.com instead of hex-editing.

haha what ? why do I just now notice that, can we have a longplay of the golden axe via the view of one of those little wizard that you have to kick at night ? Does some informations like hitbox are from the picture itself ?

I really appreciated all your inputs, I learned a lot about one of my favorite video game. I decided that to close the topic I could do a cover of Dermot Power painting using game sprites. One could say I have too much time on my hand, but it was as much fun to do as reading your contributions, so I guess I owe you that guys.
