Are there any demos (like Panic, 2nd Reality) that support a 286 AND the Gravis Ultrasound? Crystal Dreams runs on a 286, but supports only Sound Blaster... Seems the overlap of the 286 and GUS era was too small. Which is a shame, because the GUS is a great accelerator, taking a big load of the CPU.

Answering my own question: It seems "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" fits the criteria:

EDIT: Almost! It is supposed to run, but on my machine there is only garbage on screen. The music works, though! 😀

EDIT 2: By swapping the TVGA 9000 for an ET4000 I got it to run at least a bit. Runs until the credits, where some glitches begin, then black screen. Dangit. Seems to be a very delicate demo... 😀

WOW! I didn't realise the demo scene took in the 286! I always assumed it was a post 386 thing as all those guys were on Amiga/ST/64 till the 486 DX/2 66 came along and made the PC seem like a worthwhile proposition performance wise.
I know we have had some awesome stuff for the old PC/XT class machines in recent years but thought the 286 was the forgotten stepchild as far as demo's were concerned.
Anyone care to recommend me some cool demo's for my 286-20,1MB, VGA, Sound blaster ver 2.0?

With SoundBlaster you can run Crystal Dream by Triton. That works quite well on a 286.

Actually the PC demo scene was not that great until 1993/94. That's when the really good productions took off, IMHO. The Amiga scene was way ahead thanks to the powerful custom chips. However with the demise of Commodore and the relative flop that was AGA, the PC got the upper hand with much better CPUs (even when VGA still was pretty lame and the CPU had to do all the heavy lifting). I have had my A500 only for a year or so, but good grief -- the demos on the Amiga are soooo much better. 😀

Indeed! I bought my Amiga A500 back in 1987, my first pay packet in fact! I recall my pal's having neat things on the Commodore 64 at that time or so, but not till the DX/2 66 was a standard computer do I recall seeing stuff on the PC, second reality is the one I remember.

"Legend" by impact is the one I'm most familier with from demo browsing.

Takes exclusive use of GUS too. No SB support (a real shame in hindsight these days with how expensive GUS are).

I'm not sure about memory requirements, because I have 4MB in my 286 PC, but those demos below are I think quite good.

Thanks, but which support the GUS as well?

I'm afraid none of the above 🙁 GUS is too new for 286...

Yeah, that's what I thought. Although the GUS would have been perfect for the 286, taking a bunch of CPU load off programs.
