Over the weekend, I won me a Toshiba T4800CT 486 notebook computer for a reasonable price. The specs are as follows according to online resources:

Intel i486 DX4-SL 75MHz
8MB RAM
500MB HDD
1.44MB floppy drive
Windows Sound System (will look inside to see which chip(s) is/are installed)
WD90C24A video
TFT Color 640x480x256 Color

It had a side trackball, but I didn't see it in the listing, but it has a PS/2 port and serial port for external mice. I was thinking about getting a docking station for the system as well to add a full length CD-ROM drive and a couple of ISA cards, like an MPU-401 clone card, NIC, and other possibilities, but I have plenty of PCMCIA network cards and a PCMCIA CD-ROM drive as well (will test that out to make sure it works).

Stay tuned for the next episode/thread about the system itself, show and tell (photo op), and so on.

Great laptop, quality screen, only one bad thing is not native Dos SB compatible sound card.

Side trackball is pretty nice thing:

Looks like docking station too expensive, double of laptop price:

Yeah. The cool thing about the docking station is it supports external floppy drives (either 360KB or 1.2MB), which is cool in of itself.

Does the 4800CT also have the backup battery under the keyboard bezel around the LCD hinge/microphone? I found the NIMH backup battery on my 4900CT had eaten some traces for the video chip, but it worked again after fixing up those broken traces.

Great screen and sound on the 4800CT / 4900CT laptops, though the lack of direct SB support is annoying, afaik there's a TSR you can get that gives SB emulation, but I haven't found or set that up yet.

The TSR is within the installation diskettes for WSS 2.0, but that requires Windows 3.1 to be installed in order to get said TSR. I might look it up some more to find the TSRs themselves and put them onto a diskette and use that on there or just copy the files over to the HDD using my HDD to USB 3.0 adapter I have and might as well upgrade the HDD (hope the BIOS can take LBA drives).

T4850CT fresh user here: Re: Spitz retro-PCs I've just finished dissasembly ... Because an error P10 were shown on the LCD - my advice guys.... change the caps - those are really far too big in my laptop.... Even this single on the soundcard 😒

There was on here too - but someone cutted it out before doing any damage....
If You have any question if it comes to tear off - let me know to prevent unnecessary damages.

Well... I miss 80/90s ... End of story

Once I receive the laptop, I'll inspect the inside and remove the Ni-MH backup battery. The RTC uses a rechargeable Lithium battery, which is weird. My Satellite Pro 410CDT had Ni-MH batteries that leaked and 1 caused corrosion and damage to the pins. Gotta fix that and start my own thread about every system I have, specs for every system, and so on.

I wonder what would happen if the CPU can get swapped (well, desoldered and put on another CPU) from the DX4-SL 75 to an Am5x86-P75 at 3.3V? Probably not, but I don't want to chance it.

Got the laptop on Thursday and got it setup on Saturday evening. The T4800CT doesn't have the OPL3 YMF-262M chip (the T4850CT has that), which is why it has no FM sound. I disassembled the laptop and inspected it for any damage on Sunday evening (my time zone) and found a small portion of white substance (not corrosion, must've been paint or something) and after cleaning that off, I reassembled the laptop and it does run without issues. The only hiccup I have is the 24x IO Magic CD-ROM PCMCIA drive as the system hangs at the Card Services 2.10 driver. So my plan is to get a better CD-ROM drive, preferably a Panasonic KXL-D745 that not only is a quad-speed CD-ROM drive but it also has support for Adlib/Sound Blaster in DOS.

And only 1 dead pixel on the screen, but that's no big deal. Might as well look for replacement TFT active LCDs.

Fortunately, the laptop does run well still and the resume battery didn't leak at all and still has a charge. The main battery has seen better years (voltage is a bit over the threshold), so that needs to be rebuilt or replaced with a Li-Ion battery or cells and the laptop did come with the charger, cable for the token ring adapter, and the side trackball. Going to order some diskettes so that I can make recovery diskettes so that way the system can get a clean OS refresh and backup the data on my laptop in case there's anything important, but I don't think there's anything important on the hard drive other than Planet X3, but I have that on my 720KB diskette, so that's no problem.

Still having issues with the CD-ROM drive hanging up the PCMCIA driver set for DOS, though, which is odd.
