My build is
AMD Athlon 1.3ghz
Geforce 4 MX 440 64mb
768mb RAM (I have Unofficial SP3 installed so I should be okay)
Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value

So anyway, I've been installing many of my old games like mad, just looking for some good recommendations for this build of things I might not have tried back in the day.
Currently installed:

Arcanum
Arcomage
Baldur's Gate II
Black & White (won't work though)
Carmageddon
Claw
The Dark Eye
Disciples 2 Gold
Europa Universalis
Fallout 1 & 2
Final Fantasy VII
Gothic
Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold
House of the Dead
House of the Dead 2
The Longest Journey
Mageslayer
Might and Magic VI
Might and Magic VII
Morrowind (need to upgrade my graphics card to make it run worth a darn at some point)
Quest for Glory V
Sacred Gold
System Shock 2
C&C Tiberian Sun
Unreal Tournament 2003 (I know 2k4 is same but better, but that's the one I played the most back in the day)
Wheel of Time

Anyway, that's it. I love getting ideas/recommendations from other people, hopefully this isn't just another one of my dead threads. Thanks!

This is a spreadsheet I made with top games per year, it might be helpful: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Vi0YV … pKOyVJqZsuqVzQg

Oh, cool, thank you!

EDIT: Unless I've done something wrong, it only goes to 1990 and doesn't have very many games.

EDIT AGAIN: Nope I'm just bad at spreadsheets. I found the rest. IGNORE ME

1.) MS-DOS 6.22, Pentium 233mhz, 32mb RAM, S3 Trio64, Sound Blaster Pro 2
2.) Windows 98SE with Unofficial SP3, AMD Athlon 1.3ghz, 768mb RAM, Geforce 4 MX 440 64mb AGP, Sound Blaster Live! Value

Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:

  • Diablo 1&2
  • WarCraft 2 Battle.net edition
  • StarCraft + Brood Wars exp.
  • Tomb Raider series
  • Quake 2
  • Command & Conquer Gold
  • Red Alert
  • Master of Orion 2
  • Thief 1&2
  • Deus Ex
  • Unreal Tournament 99
  • Half-Life 1
  • Star Trek Voyager Elite Force

You didn't ask for DOS games so I didn't mention any, but there are plenty of excellent ones that you can run under Win98 on that system too. I also consider anything after 2001 to be WinXP era, so I didn't list those either.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Freelancer
  • Half Life series

For me, the "Win98se era" was pretty short as my upgrade to WinMe was rather immediate (mid-late 2000)

so, here's a list for the 98se glory days....
- Age of Empires 2 + expansion
- Age of Wonders
- Alice
- Battlezone II
- Comanquer Tiberistorm
- Dark Reign 2
- Diablo II
- Driver
- Deus Ex
- Dungeon Keeper II
- Everquest (maybe Project 1999 can work for win98?)
- Evolva
- Flying Heroes
- Freespace 2
- Ground Control
- Half-Life + Opposing Force
- Heavy Metal FAKK 2
- Icewind Dale
- Jagged Alliance 2
- MDK2
- Midtown Madness 1+2
- NASCAR Heat (it's the one with the damage)
- Need for Speed High Steaks and Porsche Unleashed
- Nox
- No One Lives Forever
- Rayman 2
- Re\Volt
- Rogues Pear
- Soldier of Fortune
- Starfleet Command
- Starlancer
- Star Trek Armada
- Star Trek Klingon Academy
- Star Trek DS9 The Fallen
- Star Trek Voyager Elite Force
- Sims, The
- Starsiege Tribes
- System Shock 2
- Tachyon
- Thief II
- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
- UT and Q3. just both of them okay. Nerf Arena Blast's also pretty good if you can bear with the late 90s neon+plastic toy aesthetics
- Worms Armageddon
- X

Now here's a list if you want to torture yourself:
- Carmageddon TDR 2000
- Catechumen
- Daikatana
- Extreme Paintbrawl series
- Force Commander
- Jeff Gordon's XS Racing
- Hidden & Dangerous (difficult)
- Interstate '82
- Messiah
- Mortyr
- Star Trek New Worlds
- Test Drive 6
- Timeline
- Ultima IX
- Unreal Return to Na Pali
- Early WildTangent games and 3dgroove shockwave games

Byzantine: The Betrayal (First-person point and click adventure with 360 degree viewpoint like the later Myst games, located in Istanbul, Turkey. Beautiful scenery)
Expect No Mercy (Mortal Kombat clone with a VR theme. Cheesy but very enjoyable if your PC is not too fast)
Lords of Magic (Heroes of Might and Magic-like game with its own unique atmosphere)
Magic and Mayhem (Real-time strategy game with unique magic system. Imagine Warcraft 3 with just the heroes and without the base-building part)
Sacrifice (very unique strategy game which plays like a sort of single-player MMO)
Theocracy (Unique RTS game with native american theme)
Time Warriors (Soul Calibur-like fighting game)

If you are into mecha and vehicle combat:
Interstate '76 (and maybe '82)
MechWarrior 2 and 3

iM1A2 Abrams, although this one runs perfectly on Windows XP (but not Win 7).
M1 Tank Platoon 2.
Jane's Fighters Anthology.
Jane's F-15.
Jane's Longbow 2.
Jane's 688(i) Hunter/Killer.
Jane's Fleet Command.
Joint Strike Fighter.
Jetfighter III.
Jetfighter Full Burn.
MiG Alley.
Sabre Ace: Conflict Over Korea.
Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers.
Axis & Allies.
Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001.

Some of the titles above cannot run well --or at all-- on Win XP and above, so a Win 98 PC would be nice. In any case, I'd suggest you equip your PC with a Voodoo or Voodoo 2.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Wow, some great recommendations in there! Thanks everyone! Also, I have a DOS specific PC, so DOS recommendations are totally fine too. Getting DOS games running properly on my 98 machine proved irritating, hence I also built a DOS machine.

1.) MS-DOS 6.22, Pentium 233mhz, 32mb RAM, S3 Trio64, Sound Blaster Pro 2
2.) Windows 98SE with Unofficial SP3, AMD Athlon 1.3ghz, 768mb RAM, Geforce 4 MX 440 64mb AGP, Sound Blaster Live! Value

Just check what's for sale on GOG. Often there's a reason things are still worth selling today. (Not always. But often.)

POD
POD: Back to Hell

This game was used to promote the Pentium's MMX features.
It's a pretty good apocalyptic racing game.

Comes with all kinds of renderers for various graphics cards, 3Dfx looks the best imho.

There's even a force feedback patch if you've got a Sidewinder racing wheel or something like that.

Looooooove Mechwarrior 2-4

also I think I have a copy of Interstate '76 lying around somewhere, one of those random thrift store finds. I heard that it uses the Mech2 engine, I'll have to install it and check it out!

Also a fantastic recommendation. I own it and I've beaten it in days gone by. Other than the final chapter, fantastic game.

Spent countless hours with POD on my grandfather's computer back in the day. It's definitely going on this machine. Thanks!

I own a laughably large amount of GOG games, sometimes they transfer over nicely to my older machines. Thanks!

I'd love a Voodoo card, but sadly they are expensive as can be. Also, I believe I own Magic The Gathering from 1997, the one colloquially known as Shandalar. Is Duels of the Planeswalkers a better choice?

How about GeForce 4600Ti? They're not that expensive, and they're much better than GeForce 440MX.

That depends on a couple of things:

1. Does the MX440 have a 128-bit memory interface?
2. What resolution are you playing the games at?

A 128-bit MX440 is not that far behind in 640x480 and 800x600. Any higher than that and the GeForce4 will outpace it. Of course, this also applies to Anti Aliasing. And if you want to play DirectX 8.1 games which use pixel shaders on Win98, then GeForce4 is obviously the way to go.
