i am going to provide as much information that i know how to before i get to my problem:

# Motherboard - Sorry, don't know how to check this. if someone could tell me I would be able to provide the information.

# Processor type and speed - AMD Duron [pentium 3?] 751 mhz

# Amount and type of RAM - 640mb

# Video board w/ RAM amount and type - not sure [someone please tell me how to check so i can give the info.]

# Sound board - not sure [someone tell me how to check]

# Operating system - WinXp

# Game name (and version, if applicable) Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The Tale of Orpheo's Curse

I'm trying to follow this guide and i've followed everything exactly as they said, and when it comes time to put in "H:\>INSTALL" [my drive is E, so i obviously changed it in the dosbox setup] it says "Illegal command: INSTALL.]

any help here? I will provide more information if needed. [sorry if i am coming off as an idiot]

Please show us the AutoExec section of your DOSBox.conf.

And - do a DIR command before you try the INSTALL, and post the result of the DIR command here.

mount E E:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
mount C C:\
C:

also, what is a DIR command? [sorry, i've never used dos/dosbox before.]

DIR command is used to display a list of files/folders.

Weird
Try using DOSBox 0.65 btw. It is much more compatible.

Are you sure the -usecd 0 is correct? Try removing it.

i removed it so it looked like this:
mount E E:\ -t cdrom -ioctl
then like this:
mount E E:\ -t cdrom
then like this:
mount E E:\

none worked. i really don't see what's wrong...

Are you sure the physical cd-rom letter is E too?

Can you use a different drive?

it's the only drive i have that works.

i have an f drive as well, bit it doesn't read anything.

EDIT:
i actually had a cd-rom drive laying around, so i'll check that. [it's brand new so it should work]

another edit:
won't recognize the new drive either...

i know e should work, because it's the drive i've installed everything through.

Okay.... Reality check time. If you insert the CD-ROM in your E-drive, can you then browse/navigate around on the CD-ROM with Windows Explorer in Windows XP?? Which files are visible in the root folder of E: ?

And at what point exactly do you think the magic will kick in?

i don't see why they wouldn't be visible, seeing that it is the retail version of the game.

And if you start a CMD.EXE window, and do:

C:\> E:
E:\> attrib

what do you see then?
