Anyone manage to get Dark Forces tricked into running in XP? It's a pretty stubborn game...... Even with sound completely off it won't go.

No one I know of.

The first person to post screenshots in this thread of the PC version running in Windows 2000/XP wins... ummm... a free smily-face graphic in the thread.. The Mac version won't work in any emulator (it's PPC-only, I believe.)

Are you giving the menu for the setup/install program time to come up? I thought the same thing until I remembered that it does some "quicky" diagnostics on your hardware when it starts up. It's just that under XP, it's not so "quicky".
Thanks! 😀
...didn't this game have VESA modes? Would they work with NOLFB? Or am I imagining it?

I wish. Dark Forces is pure ol' 320X200.
There's a well-known condition that causes you to remember games as BETTER than they actually were (if you liked them). It seems I suffer from this. 😀

In this case you were probably wishing the Mac version's graphic modes onto the PC version. That doesn't work either.
Guilty as charged.
Funny thought: If someone could redesign all of Dark Forces' levels, objects, scripting, etc. to run on Outlaw's tweaked version of the JEDI engine, then you could use the 3dfx patch for Outlaws and have Glide "Dark Forces". Oddly enough, someone is working on something like this, since Outlaws had multiplayer support and Dark Forces didn't. All they need to do is go all the way and convert the rest of the levels. 😀

Of course, as I said before, someone already is making a Dark Forces total conversion for Jedi Knight II, and someone else is reverse-engineering the Jedi engine using Direct3D, so I'm not sure what the point would be.
Ah well, it's good enough that you got it working. 😀

Quite a problem this is isn't it?
I remember playing Syndicate as a kid, i went to try it out the other week and was horrified by the disgusting graphics.
Playing the latest games for so long, the classics , even though were enjoyable just are not up to par now days 🙁
Eeepp that post was from me!
It didnt post from me 😒
The dij speakes wisdom once more.....
i got df to work in win2k,
it works with adlib music and sb sound, the game works but the music is really really really really really really slow and crappy sounding thanks to the timing issue 🙁
midi crashes whenever i try to use it, i'll try updaitng my live drivers tho.
it really didnt need much to get it working, its not using the build engine because the build engine wasnt even in beta at that time 🤣. i thikn it's a engine lucasarts coded themselves. just use the vdmsound launchpad.
what surprised me is that i thought it would work better in xp than in 2k 😜
me again,
i did smoe more roaming on vogons and sourceforge, and found pitset, ha that program is the best thing to come since vdms 🤣. I redid the launcher to use pitset and set the value to 12, and the game works perfectly in win2k, im sure if u use vdms on xp and tried df again with pitset it should work.
btw i couldnt get the game to install either at first for those who have install problems all i did was copy the dark dir to the c drive, and then ran imuse.exe with vdms launcher, (imuse.exe is lucasart's equivalence to setup.exe) then i setup vdms launcher to run pitset.exe and put in as arguments: 12 dark.exe
game works fine with a pit of 12 in win2k, good luck with xp im here if u need any help...
Use SPEEDSET. PITSET is an older, inferior version.
Yes, it’s my fault.
