PC Info: P4 2.6GHz 512MB RAM WINXP
DosBox Ver: 0.65
Game Name: Betrayal at Krondor

Hello, this is my first post here in the forums. I've recently downloaded dosbox 0.65 in the hopes of being able to play the old games I used to play. Anyway, I've installed the dosbox without any hitches and have followed the directions about mounting the game directory and started the game. But when I tried saving it, the game displayed a message saying something like: "Unable to save game, invalid drive/directory." and when I looked into the drive list, there wasn't any listed. So in the end, I had to quit dosbox without saving my game which is really frustrating seeing as how far I've gone through it. If anybody has the answers, please reply. Thank you.

On a side-note, I've searched the forum regarding this and found posts regarding memory problems. Oh, and I also tried mounting another directory as the d drive hoping the game would detect it but to no avail.

I checked the game folder and found it set as read-only. I changed it and tested if I can save but it still can't. As for how I mount the folders, I added these lines at the very bottom of dosbox.cfg: (where the autoexec block is)

mount C C:\GAMES <-- Where my games are stored
mount D C:\GAMES\SAVE <-- New folder hoping it will be detected as a save point

If you're using NTFS file system it's possible that DOSBox doesn't have permission to write to that directory. Try this:
1. Go to Folder Options from the control panel, and make sure "Use simply simple file sharing" is unchecked
2. Go to "properties" of C:\Games in Windows
3. In Security tab, click Advanced-> Add... -> Advanced -> Find Now, choose "Everyone", confirm "OK" twice
4. Allow "Full Control", OK
5. "Replace permission entries on all child objects", OK (you can also uncheck "Allow inheritable permissions" -> Remove)

Then it might work.

@ChaosFish

I followed the steps described in your post and tried saving again. Still nothing, it still displays the same message. Any other solutions on your mind guys?

Btw, nice avatar. 😀 It's from the game Alley Cat right?

Maybe it's just the config file of the specific game? It would help if you knew where it tries to save the game.

Yep Alley Cat! The first really good PC game. I once sent IBM an email to encourage them to release a remake 😁

As far as I know, this save game problem is an isolated one. I've checked this forum about it but found only memory issues with BAK. I've downloaded BAK from Abandonia by the way. I have the original disk but it doesn't read anymore. Is it possible that I'm missing a file for this game?

As for the Alley Cat, I think I've seen a remake of it for cellphones. There's another game that I've missed, Zarrgon (I think) d'you know anything about it? 😀

Isn't Betrayal At Krondor freeware? If I'm not mistaken it was released freeware, I downloaded it back when 10mb took a whole day to download... You can download it and it's update patch from here.

Hm.. so what you're saying is, I might have downloaded the demo version or something? If that is so, then that would answer the question about not being able to save. However, BAK isn't ESA protected which means it's freeware... Ugh, trying to fix this game suddenly became more complex than expected. 😵

As I remember, I was able to play and save this game in my old 486 PC. I guess the game died with it... Too bad.

Huh???

Sorry if it's confusing. As I understand, vintage games are protected by ESA to prevent its free-distribution. I've checked Abandonia, The Underdogs and other sites about BAK and found out that it isn't ESA protected. Which meant it is free to copy for PRIVATE use only. So I went ahead and searched for a full version which was available at some other site and downloaded it. It's working fine now. Save game and all.

As for the legality (if necessary), it's the same as ROMS. As long as you have the original, it's ok to have an extra copy.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, it's just the way I understand it. 😅

the definition you are using is used by abandonware. not freeware.

Q: Where is Betrayal at Krondor? Isn't it freeware?

A: The legal status of Betrayal at Krondor has finally been determined.

The following response was received from a Vivendi Universal Games representative who was familiar with the particulars of the legal situation:

Quote:

"We [Vivendi Universal Games] have existing contracts with other companies that preclude us from being able to authorize this [redistribution by unlicensed third parties]."

This finally settles the question with the answer that Betrayal at Krondor is not redistributable freeware, except by Vivendi Universal Games and specific contractual partners. As Liberated Games does not have any such agreement with Vivendi Universal Games, we cannot redistribute Betrayal at Krondor.

No game is freeware unless the Publisher/Developer states it is so (or if the copyright runs out).

You cannot trust "Abandonware" sites to tell you if a game is "freeware" or not.

Also it is not legal to download a copy if you have the original. (Unless it's in the EULA). I repeat IT IS NOT LEGAL TO DOWNLOAD A COPY IF YOU OWN THE ORIGINAL IF IT'S NOT IN THE EULA.

Now what's legal and what's morally right are two different things but @ VOGONS we do not condone the downloading of copyrighted content if it's not legally allowed.

Oh, in that case then I guess I'll have to delete BAK and search for a site that legally distributes it or buy another copy then. My apologies for the mix up. 😅

Just always remember that what's legal and what's morally right are 2 separate things, like DosFreak said.
