The Radeon 8500 @275MHz takes the most advantage from the higher Clock to the GF3 Ti500 @250MHz. The performance relevant features (shaders and pipes) are nearly equal. But your 8500DV runs normally @200MHz. So a GF3 should be faster.
yes, I am aware that my 8500dv is weaker than gf3, but I don't currently own a gf3, and Im of course on the lookout for one, but even more so, I am looking for 275mhz 8500... why are they so rare dammit
You can try to overclock a 250MHz version with 4ns RAM to 275MHz. In the most cases you should be successful. There are some 250MHz cards with 3.6ns RAM which should surely fit the 275MHz.
Ahh, and currently in ebay germany is a Powercolor (AR2TD-B3) 8500 @275MHz for 60€. A good price in my opinion.
I noticed it, and honestly I think the price is perhaps just a bit too much, especially since it seems to be a weird revision with 275mhz core but only 250mhz memory (sauce: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33646274 - 2nd post: "and AR2TD-B3L is 275/250"), also its a 64mb card, I really want a 128mb 275mhz 8500, since Im gonna play at 1600x1200, the extra vram will surely help. Which versions of the 8500 even have 128mb vram? Seems to be just the all-in-wonder 8500 (not DV) and the hercules 8500?

Some ebay stuff got delivered today, among them an ati radeon 8500 64mb with hopefully the full 275mhz clocks. Also I'm not so sure if thats the fastest 2001 gpu anymore, Phil's benchmarks found it to be, but Im not sure what driver he used for the GF3, we all know later drivers make it slower. I managed to find a reasonably cheap Ti500 and I'm waiting for its delivery as well, I'll try to compare them for myself and whichever I find to be the fastest goes into the build

yes, which wasn't a problem as I can just tie an 80-120mm fan to the card that will cover all the heatsinks.... the problem is that I tested it just now, and it's a dud 🙁 seems to be shorting something because PC won't power on while this card is inserted 🙁
Oh no. I'd give the card a really good inspection for and bent and touching pins or damaged traces. Hopefully you can repair the card

Did you manage to make the GF3 work again? and if so, what were the comparison results?
I gave it to a friend that works in electronics repair service and knows his stuff... Seems like he can't fix it, says "it has a giant short on the card's 3.3v power rail, it gonna need something BIG to burn trough it. Probably something in-between the PCB layers. 10 amps from my bench power supply weren't enough to even get it warm. Might work with a car battery, but it will probably kill the rest of the card as well"

Still, you are lucky to have a friend capable of those kind of repairs.
I´ve got two cards (Voodoo 3 3000 and GF4 ti 4400) displaying artifacts that I´d like to have repaired, no one with the needed skills around.
voodoo3 is unlikely to suffer gpu chip failures, not using ball grid aray like newer cards, so probably some of the memory chips need replacing, a rather complex operation still

512 or 1024mb of DDRAM depending on the operating system you want to use.
Geforce4 ti4600
Maxtor single platter hard drive or something similar.
VIA KT266A is faster than the AMD 760.
