Hi,

just wondering what will happen if someone put an Intel 486DX2/66 in Nexgen motherboard and power it on? I know a silly question, but I saw a photo of it and I'm wondering if the motherboard could get damaged by it? Would the pins acutally fit!?

Requests are also possible... /msg kixs

Different sockets / pin counts.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

Yeah, the socket is completely different, no other CPU will fit in it.

The density of pins in the NexGen socket is almost exactly double 😀

Reluctant to turn it on though. It would almost certainly blow up something...

Let me put an educated guess. Given most pins in either socket are power points it is almost guaranteed there is a short +4V (or whatever the voltage is) to ground somewhere. Depending how quickly you switch it off there will be a strong current that would destroy the CPU socket with the typical blue smoke effect. The CPU might actually survive just like the rest of the motherboard. But I might be wrong.

I will survive - 486.
