Hi.

My system specs are: pentium 200, 24mb ram, s3 trio64 v2 dx, ms-dos

Duke Nukem 3D shareware can be set to run at 640x480 and 800x600, and runs good.

Quake shareware, can't set it to anything higher 360x480, there are simply no such resolutions available to select.

What is going on? How can I set D3D to high res, but can't Quake?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, but;

I am not just trying to make it run at high-res by any means possible.

I want to know it this is normal and happens for everyone, or just me.

And why it can't do 640x480 while Duke3D can do even 800x600 on pure dos, no extras loaded.

Funny, I have opposite problem - I can run Quake in any resolution my monitor supports but cannot run Duke in anything but 320x240.
I am pretty sure you won't be able to run Quake in higher res without S3 VBE. I have Virge DX installed and without S3 VBE Quake runs only in lower resolutions too.

Quake demands VESA 2.0 with linear frame buffer (LFB) support for higher res modes. Duke Nukem 3D can use VESA 2.0 modes if they are available but also can use VASA 1.2 modes with only banked frame buffer (it's slower but works with older cards/video bios).
