Though indeed, FTP would be nice, as it would allow downloads directly to vintage machines.

Not sure what sort of vintage you're thinking about. Does the site not work in Lynx, or something?

harryshuman wrote on 2020-10-01, 22:30:

We could also organize a torrent based solution. P2P surely will speed things up.

Only if there are a lot of people interested in seeding. And I doubt the downloads are that popular in general.

Well, for myself, and the reason I made this thread in the first place, I would like to make a quick 1 line FTP dump from the website. I have a solid server with triple parity where the files will be safe, and figured I start backing up FTP repos of old drivers on the account that all companies seem to have declared war on old software. Already fetched 300+ gigs.

On vintage machines, BitTorrent is even harder than HTTP.

Indeed, it does work in Lynx.
So, a 386 with enough RAM should be fine.
But what about 8088/286 ?

This has been asked before, and basically, it would cost me too much.

If one person gets FTP access, everyone gets FTP access. If everyone has FTP access, some/many of those people will start mirroring the site, all the bandwidth is consumed, the site goes down, then nobody can access it.

Earlier in the year, the monthly bandwidth was consumed in a few days by a handful of people trying to mirror the site using WinHTTrack.

There is also a HTML 2.0 version that should work in any browser under the sun: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/lofi/

This seems to have problems when actually going to download the file, at the moment.

Thanks, that's actually fairly helpful. I mean it's not as elegant of a solution, but it will do.

So I tried two browsers, both on a 386SX with 4 MB RAM, under DOS:

Lynx 2.8.1rel.1 (1998) - the main site works, although is somewhat inconvenient to navigate, the "lofi" variant is convenient, but indeed can't download - error 403

Lynx 0.16a (DosLynx) - doesn't work no matter if main or lofi, displays the "Save as" dialog instead of trying to render the HTML, perhaps it's the <!DOCTYPE> tag getting in the way?

I guess that "403" problem can be fixed, so no problem for 32-bit PCs.
But for 16-bit ones... anybody knows any browser good enough, at least for that "lofi"?

Well, are there DOS binaries for wget somewhere? A quick Google suggests that it is portable.

But it seems to me that one would already have a local file server for such machines and that it would be just as easy to pass files indirectly.

Do you know the "View Contents" trick? That at least gives you the ability to download individual files from within the big archive.

Wow, that's even news to me! Cheers!

Once inside, there's a file called "listing.csv" that shows the filenames beside their actual title from the database.

There are - compiled with DJGPP, ie. 386+
16-bit PCs can into FTP, but hardly into WWW, even if it's just the 90s WWW.

Yeah, it's pretty buried. But it works for any archive format they support (ZIP, 7Z, RAR, ISO -yes even ISO-, etc.) It's been working this way for many years in some form or another.

Initially there wasn't even really a link to the View Contents page, what you had to do was copy the download link, add a backslash to the end of the URL, paste into the address bar, and go.

These days you click "Show All" under the download links and then find an item that says "View Contents", which is often the original upload. I still often do the "add a backslash" thing out of habit, it still works.

So in this case:

1. https://archive.org/details/vogons-drivers-snapshot-20200627

2. https://archive.org/download/vogons-drivers-s … apshot-20200627

3. https://ia801909.us.archive.org/view_archive. … ot_20200627.zip

4. https://archive.org/download/vogons-drivers-s … zip/listing.csv

Jason Scott lays it out in a funny tweet here: https://twitter.com/textfiles/status/1010001835376009216

URLs inside the View Contents page should remain stable. In theory you could do archive.org as a storage backend, though they tend not to recommend or endorse doing so, they just would rather be used for backups/archives.

I merged harryshuman's separate thread over here since it directly concerned VOGONSDrivers.

Is it of interest "The MGA Millennium Bulk CD Version 1.3, January 20, 1996"? Currently in Vogons Driver we have "The Matrox Millennium Multimedia SuperPack Version 1.60, November 11, 1996" which I think it is a later version of the same CD but with a rebranded title.

The ISO is available at the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nyku4hh0f6p0nsm/BLK … FEB_96.ISO?dl=0

I've dumped the ROMs for the Emerson 4412 286 system. It's a pretty neat box, and there's not a lot of information around on it.

It's got a lot of nice features: 8mb ram max, built-in hardware EMS support, boots from rom, a very in-depth self diagnostic BIOS utility. The manual hints at some sort of advanced built-in audio but I've not looked into that yet.

If you can get a good picture of: The motherboard AND the boot up BIOS POST screen will add it to the BIOS section.
