Hello!

yesterday I tried to install Win 3.11 for workgroups in the DosBox machine, but it didn't really work. I think it might be a good idea to tell you, what I've done.

After Installing DosBox, tipped:
mount a d:\dosbox\a
mount c d:\dosbox\c
mount d f:\ -t cdrom

I also installed some modifications, so the language is in german and I can use a german keyboard (for example, y and z is no longer 'switched')
I have done that with a file called "deutsch.lng" (for german language) and Keyb.exe, which is part of FreeDos.

Now the installation began. I once copied all win 3.11 floppy disks on a cd and burned them, so I thought I can copy all files from each floppy disk into the 'd:\dosbox\a' - path, everytime The Installation is asking for the next disk. In DosBox, I changed to a:\ and tipped SETUP - and the setup began.
After it copied the data from floppy disk one (or better to say: it installed them) it asked for floppy-disk one. I just hit [Return], because all files from floppy disk 1 were in the folder, that DosBox should accept as the FloppyDrive.
It asked again for disk 1 - after several times hitting [Return] DosBox broke down.

Okay, I mean, it's Windows, so it would be suspicous if something works how I planned it at the first time.
This time I copied all files from all FloppyDisks into 'd:\dosbox\a' - my DosBox FloppyDrive.
Well, now it asked again for Disk1 after coping all files from disk1 and I had to hit [Return] again, but instead of crashing, it copied "something" (I don't know what it copied, because all files from disk1 were already copied...) it asked for disk2. Guess what I had to do? Right - hit the [Return]-Key several times. Then an error occured and it told me, that either 'win.ini' or 'system.ini' are too big or my system has to less memory.

I changed "memsize=16" into "memsize=64" but this error occured again. My families old computer (cpu=74MHz, 4 MB of memory) was able to run Win3.11 and even Win95, so I don't think that the problem lies in to less memory.

I hope my English is not too messed up and you understood everything well.

So: is somebody out there, who knows how to install win3.11 on dosbox (and tell me what I've done wrong)? (It would even help me, if you know that it's completely impossible, but I would ask you for a source of that information...)

copy all files in one directory. and then install
not copy when they ask for a new disk.

well, that was my second thought, but it didn't work. (I wrote it in the first post, that i copied all files into the folder, that is supposed to be my DosBox-floppy-drive).

it still asked for disk1.

Works fine for me though (german wfw 3.11). Maybe add a "-t floppy"
after the "mount a c:\???" and be sure you really copied ALL files of
all disks.

Put it into a subdirectory on your Dosbox C:. Definitely works that way.

Well, now I copied ALL files of ALL disks into folders named '1', '2' and so on. I tried to install from DosBox drive c (harddrive) and from DosBox Floppy-Device (I copied the folders 1, 2, ... into the mounted folder).

It still asks me several times for floppy 1 and it crashes at disk2, at about 93% of installation 🙁

well, maybe my copy of win311 is already broken. Do you know a legal (!!!) download for those disks, german copies are preferred.

hmm, really strange. For me it always worked (even back then on a real DOS machine) to just copy all my floppy disk contents onto one directory and then after I burned this, I could easily start the installation from this CD and it ran through without any hassle.
One thing that sprang to my mind, is, are there any files called "disk 1" or something like that in the dir after you copied everything? Try deleting (moving elsewhere) those files.

Otherwise, it *might* be that this only worked with my German OEM version of WfW.

And btw, did you see my short guide on how to install Windows 3.x in the guides section the Dosbox Forum?

well, now I deleted all disk*.*** - files. it still asked for disk 1 at the installation and the same error occured.

I read your guide a minute ago - tell me if I'm wrong, but the tseng drivers are not required for installing, are they?
I disabled the EMS-memory, but it still asks for disk 1 and the same error occurs...

I'm using WinXP and my dosbox version is 0.65 (was the latest version of dosbox I could get two days ago).

I have no idea what's wrong with it, I even tried to disable the mod for german-style-keyboard but it did still crash at disk 2 anyway.

There is nothing like that. Stop asking or I will close the thread!

but on ebay you can probably find a cheap version, or look at some old software bins. I found a CD-Rom with WfW 3.11 on it in a "Caritas" shop for 1 Euro.

@mirekluza
sorry, I didn't know asking for this is not allowed here - I will respect it. Well, now at least I know there is nothing like that and I don't have to search for it. 😉

@topic
well thanks for your help. I guess I will try to install it from my old floppy-disks (they have to be somewhere around in our house...) even if I'm quite sure, that these 11-years-old disks are "out of order".
