I've read the faq, the readme file, and asked around, and I just can't figure out how to start up TIE Fighter. I've got the first version of the game, on floppy disk. Every DOS emulator I use gives me the same message. I don't have enough EMS to have voices or music, and the game doesn't start.

I'm using the latest version of DOSBOX, have put the game into compatibility for win 95, and the sound tests for the game were successful. Any help would be appreciated.

Please post the EXACT error message, and info about your system,
how you configured dosbox (mounting, version etc.) and what you
already tried.

TieFighter works fine for me with default settings.

Here is the exact message.

Using 2000k of EMS will add more music and speech. 572K MAIN, 896k EMS required!

I've tried setting EMS=false in the config along with XMS, that hasn't worked. Tried more cycles, fiddled with the properties setting on the TIE.exe, like making it run in compatibility with 95, or changing the EMS on the memory tab.

Here is my config.sys

> I've tried setting EMS=false in the config along with XMS, that hasn't worked.

Expanded memory means the game wants ems=true, the xms/umb
switches shouldn't matter (but you can try to set them to false as long
as ems remains true).
Do you get different results with ems=true and xms=false?

One last question, just to make sure.

Will TIE Fighter automatically detect a joystick? I don't have one as of yet, just asking before I get one.

Hm i think there was a calibration screen inside tiefighter.
So if you got the joystick working in windows, it should be detected
by sdl (thus dosbox) as well.

I have a similiar problem with TIE Fighter (it's the first disquette version too). No matter what I try it just doesn't want to run. Here's what the game says:

Using 2000k of EMS will add more music and speech.
set FILES=30 in your config.sys

Actually nervermind. I managed to make the game work. I somehow messed the subdirectories while copying the game folder.

damn I'm so n00bish 🙁

ok. i have the exact same problem. as in the error message is the same.

now, i am a retard when it comes to this kind of stuff and i will admit that.

I guess i really need someone to walk me through this config thing. as in how the get there and everything. i have been trying for the past 2 hours.

I am running XP service pack 1 if that helps.

I also downloaded DOSbox and i have no idea how to work it right. I thought i mounted the directory but it keeps telling me it can't load it.

any help you guys can offer will be appriciated cause this is my most favorite game. 🙁

THanks

Try to use "mount C C:\Spiele" and see if the game works then, if it
doesn't mount the installation directory at d: and re-install the game.

Well maybe there's some config file, reading the posts above it might
be picky about the installation path.
