All I see is "Runs on Windows XP".

Not very encouraging.

I don't like that missing Larry 7, and lord only knows how XP compatible they are.

Never thought these would ever see the light of day! I'd also be concerned if Larry didn't have the full set of games! "Runs on Windows XP" could mean anything so we'll have to see what that means when they are actually for sale...

Btw I emailed Al Lowe and apparently he's going to be getting royalties according to VUgames. Take what you will from that.

VUgames updated the pages, I'll copy my thoughts from another forum:

Heres what I find interesting:

*They don't mention whether or not the 1st games are the remade versions or the original AGI ones. (Or both like the original collections)
*Larry claims its only 1-6, but yet a Larry 7 screenshot is in the gallery AND it states the entire thing is 1.2gb. I just checked and Larry 1-5 are only 500mb. With 7 it adds to 1gb. Take what you will from that.
*Mentions a "printer" as a requirement. Are we to assume the copy protection is on a PDF?
*CD-ROMs, not DVD (Would have to be compressed to fit)
*Requirements look quite high for old games. Did they emulate the sound or something? That makes me happier.

Apparently, they are going to be shipped with DOSBox. Take a look at the copyright disclaimer at the bottom of this page. I just hope that they manage to use the high res graphics of the Windows version of KQ6 working for this release.

What the.... 😲 I looked over that page like 3 times and didn't notice that. 😅

Absolutely zero disrespect to DOSBox, but that's just ridiculous 🙁 They are riding on the back on great work down by others. No doubt they've picked up the unofficial timer patches as well! VU have had the time and probably have all the resources to do a complete re-write of the VM but hell no, let's go cheap guys...

Just why has it taken over a year since the 1st announcement to package up DOSBox and a few old games? We've been able to do that ourselves thanks!

Finally, if DOSBox is the solution then why not plaster runs on 'Windows & Linux' just to gain a few more sales?

Honestly I'm not sure what to think here. What cycles etc are they setting? What does VUgames assume the "optimal" settings are? I'm not sure I really want to get these now, considering they aren't DVDs for one, Larry 7 isn't included and they are probably in paper sleeves knowing VUgames.

Hmm, the middle screenshot on that page is from KQ6 intro, and that one requires unofficial patch to work smoothly.
This would not be the first time an OSS product (not necessarily GPL) included in some commercial game package: Roberta Williams Collection had AppleWin, Text Adventure Masterpiece of Infocom had Frotz, Montezuma's Return had XLit (not even sure if that one was open source or not) to name a few. Nothing bad in it but somebody needs to check that they put all proper license notices where they should be. Well, we've got free publicity. Now prepare to be slashdotted in the next few days.
It's still strange to see Vivendi releasing this by themselves. I would not be surprised if Sold-Out or Xplosiv did that for them but in this case it looks like they are doing that in-house. I must say that my opinion about Vivendi just went up a few notches. And they are even releasing rather risky Larry games -- should've included Softporn with a shot of the original box 😉 My guess is that Vivendi hired some old-school geek for a manager and what we are seeing is the result of somebody's fun project.

EDIT: Main developers should contact Vivendi PR Department for courtesy copies, seriously. It's quite a common practice in the industry, I would expect Vivendi to follow it as well.

I do hope they will set everything up correctly and/or provide proper support, else our forum might be flooded when it comes out.

It is all guessing at the moment. Nobody has seen the box in action yet. So who knows...

Qbix - they haven't even contacted you for a handshake type of thing? Seriously what the hell.....I *know* it is open source but that doesn't give someone the right to just act like they did all the work. DOSBox shouldn't be just the tiny copyright notice.

I don't know what to think. I wanted to get these since many of my disks/boxes never made it to the new millenium (I know, I was a fool). However the info that they are NOT on DVD and are NOT even being upgraded bothers me. Not to mention no Larry 7.....

VUgames has been doing quite a bit to save face lately (KQ9 allowance, funding Schafer, FEAR MP free) so this just bothers me when they don't even seek you guys out. Come on, they contacted Al lowe.

I was contacted by someone of activision in the past.
it was about licensing DOSBox technology.
I told them that we wouldn't/couldn't change the license of DOSBox and they would have to use the one that everyone else uses.

I told them that theycould recommended dosbox to play their games if they wanted to, just as 3drealms and berthesa does.

The conversation ended like that.

Not sure if they are the same people and no specifics were discussed about which games or in which construction.

I don't know if activision falls under VU. I don't keep up with those things.

Activision is definitely unrelated to VUG. Activision does not surprise me in this context -- they've released more old game collections than anybody else: all these Infocom rereleases, insane number of Atari 2600 packs, Doom&co packaged and repackaged to death.

Only Larry 7 isn't included, and yes the 'talkie' games do work in dosbox. In fact every dos sierra game out there works in dosbox.
