This is the ultimate 9x laptop period.
file.php?id=121964

Features
PROS
1. Geforce2 go, a highly compatible GPU with comparible performance to somwhere between a geforce 2 MX and a TNT 2 Pro. 12.XX Drivers availible
No scaling issues, No scrolling issues, Can do 2d and 3d both well.

2. Yahama YMF754, OPL3, SBPRO compatible, 2MB hardware and 4MB with Extended XG Midi Bank wavetable. VXD and Pure Dos Drivers Availible. No Dos Midi except under 9x

3. Floppy Disk and DVD/CD Drive integrated

4. PS2 KB/Mouse port. Can use both with Y adapter.

5. Intel 815 chipset

The other skus are basically faster CPU versions that came out after the original version was released. So If anyone is looking for one, becasue I bought another one last night a 603 version

Skus

(2800-500) 800 Mhz Rare EU Version Original
2805-s402 850mhz PIII Original US Version
2805-s503 900Mhz PIII Refresh Version
2805-s603 1000Mhz PIII Last Refresh Version

As far as I know all versions are the same except for differen't speed CPUs.

CONS
Issues with Hinges they can be fixed if they are broken but you will have to find either 2805S503R, and 2805S503L those are the part numbers or take them off a lower end 14" model with savage graphics or the hinges from one and remove the brakets from both hinges and put the 15inch screen brackets on the replacement hinges.

Sounds simple but its not the whole laptop has to come apart almost minus removing the main board. You will also need tools.

This is just due to the rarity of these laptops and I have not been able to find a source for new parts. If your hinges are not broken high chance that you'll still need to do preventive maintence on them by dismanteling the laptop, removing the hinges and working them with some lube. You might need to uses the penetrative oils or soak them in gasoline or somthing to remove all the old greases and then work them back an forth with some light oil like. Singer sewing machine oil, motor oil, gun oil or somthing like that.

For whatever reason the the grease they originally used at the factory on the hinges drys up and siezes the hinges. If you are not confortible with this than I would just stay away from this laptop becasue chances are you are not going to be able to fix one if you manage to get one and it has this problem.

The LCD is only does 16bit color even though the gpu can display 32bit. But it may be possible to swap out the LCD for a better one.

The the XG 754 is not hardwired to SBLINK, there is evidence that on the 14inch with savage graphics they bothered to do this but skipped doing so on the 2nd gens.
That being siad. It is possible to take full advantage of the YMF754 regardless. There are WDM, VXDs, and pure DOS drivers availible. Each offering various levels of compatibility and quirkyness.
For example DUKE3D will work great with WDM drivers providing SBPRO and Midi in native dosbox under 9X, VXD drivers will cause it to crash windows. Pure DOS drivers in pure DOS you will have SBPRO and FM but no Midi.
The best way to tackle this is to have Dual Boot 9X setups. One with VXD drivers and another with WDM Drivers. Use somthing like windows XP with the drive hooked up to another computer and create the partitions. Then place the games that run better depending on driver type on seperate Versions. Then you have max compatibility that way.

We have a modified setupds for the XG in pure DOS. That provides OPL2, 3 and SBPRO. Its a comprimise like everything else but this single laptop has the least comprimises of every other retro laptop. The XG sets it above another similar laptop the DELL with the geforce 2go and ESS Meistro sound. The ESS solution is horrible, and honestly the geforce2 go while the most capable 3d laptop chip at its time the 32 mb vram on the dell wont really matter becasue its still slow compared to a desktop version of a geforce 2.

The XG implementation is that the codec sits on IRQ 11 as a PCI device and the legacy sound system is mapped to IRQ 7.
On my model the Geforce 2 go is mapped to IRQ 5 which isn't an issue.

Setting up the laptop so that you can use the XG in pure dos isnt that hard as long as you follow my advice.
I have tested Prince of persia, decent, doom etc all works fine. In decent you can use sbpro for effects and OPL3 as music. Though id recommend playing games that have General Midi in 98 under dos box because the native wave table of the XG is pretty good. It's quality is up there with Roland.

Guide here that should work on getting the 2805 series sound working in pure DOS and 98 properly that should apply to all the other models.

1. To go into BIOS press ESC and it will prompt you to hit F1.
2. 1st page configure parallel port as std-bi direct
3. Press page up or down to go into 2nd bios screen. You want to change Config to all devices instead of by os.
4. For parallel port select not used.

Windows Config
5. Install windows 98
6. You want to use the VXD drivers for windows I will link to to.
7. Go to device manager select the parallel port and manually change the resources. That means uncheck automatic settings.
go through the basic configurations until you find the setting that doesn't use and IRQ. On mine that is setting 003. Then Save that and I went ahead and disabled the port anyways.
8. for sound a video game controller you want to click on the legacy sound system, again you want to manually set the resources. Try Basic configuration 2. Change to IRQ7 DMA 1 io 220-220f, 388-038f, 330-0331f etc These are the like the default legacy values.

For Dos.
1. You have to use the modified 810/815 driver I'll link.
2. The SET Blaster Parameters. are SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T4
3. I already configured this in the driver I am going to link here. But if you use the one off Phils computer page you need to change somethings to get it to work.
4. If you use some other driver than the one for here. Be advised that the one from phils has the wrong environmental variables set up in the batch file and you need to change that.
5. To configure you go "YMFIRQ 11" without quotes at the command prompt.
6. Type SETUPDS Change it to S-IRQ and then you can change it to I7 220 D1 ETC. With the driver I will link it should already be setup for you. Then save.
7. Then to run the driver you type Loadtsr at the command prompt that's all.

Unpack Dos driver to C:\Yamaha It should just be Yamaha and all the files not Yamaha\Yamaha or anything else.

Fresh DS.INI if you run into any trouble. Use this only if its not letting you modify SETUPDS and save it.

Sir, do you know if this laptop supports native dos sound? Satellite 2805-S503
https://support.dynabook.com/support/staticCo … omTOCLink=false

AKM4543 chip?

Pure crap !
It's like a YMF743. It's just an AC97 soundchip. Everything about Soundblaster and legacy sound has been discarded.
Its meaningless to try to use this to play DOS games in native DOS.

Yamaha has made this to try to match costless solutions. The Toshiba SP4600 has the same soundshit.

Driver Dump Custom.
( if you use these files you do so at your own risk)
Chipset

Toshiba Common Controls (needed for toshiba power saver)
https://www.mediafire.com/file/onpto3p3r9235t … Modules.7z/file
Toshiba Power saver(utility to control CPU speed in windows among other things)
https://www.mediafire.com/file/xlwvebaggkyahj … hrottle.7z/file

Custom Geforce go 2 9x driver ver 14.10 (/w power mizer feature, useful to down clock gpu, and multi monitor support)
Includes riva tuner 2.24 (use driver and riva tuner at own risk) (if not getting max performance check the power mizer by default its not full performance.
I recommed using Custom 12.xx Driver posted later in the thread.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/g4jkoeokzvys53 … r_14.10.7z/file
VXD Yamaha XG drivers, included DOS drivers with modded ICH2.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/2vwr71xmgxf6sn … Drivers.7z/file
Intel 10/100 ethernet
https://www.mediafire.com/file/fofncgqalxg3ps … /PRO100.7z/file
Optional Intel proset which have ability to throttle the power usage (useful for laptop but keep in mind it uses CPU resources so it might slow you down)
https://www.mediafire.com/file/74xnsrb0hgcji7 … /proset.7z/file
PCMCIA controller driver
https://www.mediafire.com/file/jf7pxpd5sautw9 … /PCMCIA.7z/file
CPUSPD (Dos utility to throttle CPU) use at own risk of course. It throttles the FSB to slow CPU. So at 1/8 its like 12mhz FSB x 8 multiplier which get you to like 100 mhz . You should be able to slow laptop down below 486 speeds and with L2 cache disabled. you might be able to hit 486 speed with like 4/8 L2 off.
options are 1/8 - 2/8 -3/8- 4/8- 5/8- 6/8-/ 7/8- 8/8 l2 on l1 on - L2 off l1 on - l2off l1off- at any multiplier.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/3k7heyt58dz2lk … hrottle.7z/file
7zip 9.20 works on 98se
https://www.mediafire.com/file/1de6lta2n8gs1y … /7Z920.EXE/file

I recommend not running powermizer on full. If you want to use less power and less heat adjust lower. Obviously the oem driver always runs it at full, so its not a issue either way.

Thanks! Saved to my pc and made a mirror (with some small titles adjustments): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qolj1fmwncdmo7a/AA … ewjx6fzOca?dl=0
7zip was blocked, but it's possible to get it here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/fil … 9.20/7z920.msi/

Few questions:
Why not using GeForce on full power? I don't think someone bothers with battery life today.
Why there are no official video drivers from the support page? It has known issues?
How cooling is done for the Geforce 2go model? Do you have a photo of the internals?

we can link to official drivers, but there's no need to upload them, since the laptop is supported elsewhere on official page. The official video driver is fine but it's version 7.76 or something. Very old driver. 12.41s work fine as well, anyone is free to modify 12.41s themselves if they want. 14.10 Felt very good on the laptop, I tried lots of drivers and its what I settled with.

Idk what is up with the cooling of the geforce2 go. Assume its fine for these laptops to still be functioning 20 years later. I don't think it it's a issue.

7.76 is very limited. it doesn't have many features, and it doesn't work with every game.

Do you notice horrible “farting sound” when volume is on maximum? At first I thought that my speakers are broken, but looks like they are okay. Seems like system allows sound higher then it should be.

It allow higher sound than it should be. Just adjust the volume. That being said its a know issue with all XGs as mentioned in the XG thread. Yamaha YMF7x4 Guide

Tertz wrote on 2016-05-15, 18:02:

2.2. Crackling

Crackling may be caused by too high maximum volume. Sometimes it's because driver allows to set the volume too high, when it was taken from another card. With VxD drivers you may fix it in registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\YAMAHA\Driver\YMF724\VolumeMax, or by YMF7x4Utilities.

640x480 16bit Driver 12.41

Modded 12.41 driver use at own risk.

Tested the Power YMF 2.0.1. From phils site it worked good from my testing. https://www.philscomputerlab.com/yamaha-ymf74 … sound-card.html
Program allows you to load midi banks on the XG and more control over it.
The Extended Bank for Power YMF. upgrades the wavetable to 4.61 MB and it increased the quality noticeably. Tested that with heros of might and magic II and FFVII setup.
