I was building a retro PC and I had the time to run basic benchmarks on every video card I have. I would like to put this info out there in case somebody finds one of those cards in the attic and decides to use them in a retro build.
The culprits are:
- Radeon 9600 XT (Note: Overdrive feature is enabled)
- All-in-Wonder 9600
- Radeon 9550 SE
- Radeon 9200 LE
- NVS 280 PCI
- Hercules 4000TX (Note: stock clocks, as overclock even by 1 Mhz will make the card unstable even in the desktop)
- G450
- TNT2 M64
The test bench:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz 400FSB
Gigabyte GA-8IDML Rev2.0
512MB SDRAM 133Mhz
Windows 98SE
The results were as follows:
Overall, for a 2001 build you can probably use even NVS 280 (it costs so little, the proprietary VGA adapter it requires costs more than the card).
