I am about to finish NOLF on one of my Gen3 boxes (FX5950U). I want to switch back to my other Gen3 box with a Voodoo5/MX300 setup. I previously played Unreal, HL1 and Undying on it, and would now like advice on what to play next.

Should be a Glide game (direct or miniGL), from 1999-2003. I know Glide games start to this out around this time, but I struggle to find lists of Glide games broken down by year. Things already under consideration include HL OppForce, Diablo2.

What's the rest of the system look like? CPU, RAM, OS?

Since you have a Vortex2, I would suggest trying the original Half-Life.

It's not a Glide game, but it sounds amazing on A3D 2.0 cards.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

It's a win98 box with a vortex 2 sound card, athlonxp 3200+, 512mb dual channel ddr400, and the v5.

Okay, so you'll be GPU bound. I'd second Return to Na Pali and Deus Ex and add Clive Barker's Undying. That's a great game. Also, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Jedi Outcast, Unreal II, Serious Sam 1 and 2, and Daikatana. I'm pretty sure most, if not all of those are NOT Glide games, but will still play well on the V5.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

He likes air sims I see 😁. Diablo2 is definitely on the list one day, but I need to play through Diablo1 first. I am firming on Deus Ex at the moment, but I have a week or so before I am back on that PC (I rotate which retro PC I play each day).

Guilty as charge, Your Honor.

Anyway, the speakers were JBL L20Ts and the amplifier was Sansui A-40.

However, I'm not a hardcore flightsimmer. I'm the kind of guy who chooses easy landing whenever possible, and I haven't been able to land this one. I use HOTAS for immersion, not realism.

In any case, 3dfx golden years happen to intersect with flight sim golden years. Many great flight sims were launched during Voodoo era, and while not all of them are Voodoo-exclusive, many of them look best with Voodoo. In fact, if not for such old flight sims, I wouldn't bother to hunt for Voodoo on the first place. It should be noted that certain flight sims, like EF2000 V2.0, need Voodoo1 or Voodoo2 with batch file.

How about Ultima IX? That game is notoriously Voodoo-friendly, which enraged many GeForce users back then.

I have not played any Ultima before, not sure if I would need to play all the ones beforehand.

Everyone who played the other games beforehand hated Ultima IX.
So you might be better off just playing it first.

Looks like the game will be Homeworld (1999). In the end a strategy game on this PC suited my overall playlist, and Homeworld does have an option for 3dfx (albeit with a miniGl by the looks). And from playing it for around 10 minutes the graphics on the V5 are great, although the initial menu is a bit fuzzy. In-game though the graphics are crisp and clear. Looks like a good game.

About... ah, eighteen years ago, I had your ambition. Then I started playing Akalabeth (Ultima 0), then my character kept dying from hunger, then I threw my hands up with frustration, then I gave up.

How about starting from Ultima IV?

When or if I ever play Ultima I will consider it.

if your into RTS's then I highly recommend World War III: Black Gold from that list above. I'm not sure what glide adds over D3D (apart from slower framerates from its own benchmark utility) but its a great game. Especially the Russian campaign where you can send units "back home" allowing you to carry them over across missions.
