I tried playing LawnMower Man for the today for the first time on a Vista machine and Dosbox gives me an error when i try to run the game that says "Failed to find datat files". This is the first time I have used Dosbox in Vista and this is the only game I have tried so far. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate Edition RC2, Build 5744. Hopefully the developers see this to prepare Dosbox for Vista's release, also if anyone knows of any workarounds please let me know.

Well, do you get LawnMower Man to work if you're using DOSBox in some other OS?

I only have the LawnMower Man demo and it works nicely with DOSBox on my Windows 2000 Pro machine.

I'm talking about specific problems to Windows Vista. The game works fine in Dosbox on XP.

Yes, actually, probably more of a bug in Dosbox with Vista.

I keep wondering why some people is so eager to use Vista when it's not out yet. Besides, I think I am going to stick to WinXP for as much time as I can. I think Vista will suck.

Vista will suck no more than Windows XP does right now. I too have stayed away from the betas and the beta RC's because I have been disappointed in Vista. (I'd planned to do game compat testing with the RC's but since they are really beta's I'll just wait for RTM).

Not sure what the topic starters problem is, probably something he misconfigured.

I am using the disc in the cd-rom drive and I have mounted it exactly the same in Dosbox. I am a long time Vista beta tester and know my way around the operating system. It is undoubtedly something with permissions but I think that Dosbox will probably need to be updated to access the drive. So far Vista has been great and the only problems that this build has is compatibility issues with certain programs, such as Dosbox. Once those programs are updated by the developers than Vista will definitely be better than XP. I just want Dosbox to carry over all of that old gaming goodness into the next generation of Windows.

EDIT: I am not sure if this problem applies to every game, I have only tried the Lawnmower man in Vista Dosbox so far. I will try out some other Dos games like Sam and Max along with Day of the Tentacle later today to see if those work better.

Well, Sam and Max works fine. I guess this bug specifically applies to Lawnmower Man in Vista.

I am using the disc in the cd-rom drive and I have mounted it exactly the same in Dosbox.

So the disc is mounted correct (and other CD-Rom games work as you've tried), please check if the folder you mount as c is correct, especially if you have the correct read/write permissions on every file/folder in the lawnmower man install folder (I don't know this game but I guess it must have something like this). Also check if the files/folder didn'T go to read only properties for some reasons.

Actually Lawnmower man doesn't even have an install folder, it is all streamed from the CD. I've even played it in Dosbox on XP without mounting any folder, just the CD-ROM drive. I am assuming that it is some bug with streaming the video from the disc since Lawnmower man is completely video based. Maybe i'll create an ISO of the disc and mount it using DAEMON Tools to see if it is a problem accessing the CD-ROM drive in Vista. I have mounted a folder on the hard drive in Vista as well and installed Sam and Max and even patched Sam and Max with through Dosbox. So folder permissions shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I mounted the ISO in DAEMON Tools and the game ran. So it must be an issue with accessing the CD-ROM drive in Vista.
