Unable to init 320x200 in Quest for Glory 4 1/2 (ACI)

  • System: Windows XP, 256MB RAM, Matrox G400
    Program: Quest for Glory 4 1/2 (ACI v2.21.162)
    Problem: Does not start
    Reproducibility: Always
    Sound mode: Soundblaster
    Video mode: VGA
    Version: DOSBox 0.61

Using - CWSDPMI (C) 1995,1996 by Charles W Sandmann

I've tried changing the settings in the setup program for QFG 4 1/2, but it doesn't seem to work.

From the output window:
MIDI:Opened device:win32
Illegal read from 100824e
Illegal write to 11d572b
Illegal read from 100824f
Illegal write to 11d572c

The error reported by the program in DOSBox is:

There was a problem initializing graphics mode 320x200
(Problem: 'Resolution not supported')

Is this a problem other people have seen with ACI (Adventure Creator Interpreter)? Any ideas on how to get it to work?

I've also tried it from a command prompt and I get the same error...

That is the exact game I want to download.. how do I download it off the DOSBox site??

You CANNOT download any games from DOSBox page because there are none. If you want a game, buy it. 😁

In this case, however, the game is NOT commercial and you cannot buy it. It was created with what is now known as AGS (Adventure Game Studio).

Just because it's old and hard to get, doesn't mean it's ok to download it. That's still illegal. The best way to get old games is by using www.ebay.com

Few games have been released for free, such as TES: Arena, Betrayal at Krondor, Lure of the Temptress, Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Grand Theft Auto, Hidden & Dangerous and some more.

I think you are confusing "Quest for Glory 4" (a commercial game from SIERRA) with "Quest for Glory 4 1/2" (a freeware game made by authors unknown-at least to me). QFG 4 1/2 has never been sold and it seems unlikely that it will ever be sold on ebay.

Hmm don't some of these ACI games use hicolour 16bp modes, that might explain why it doesn't our 320x200 mode since there's no 16bpp mode 😀

While this game no longer produces the "problem initializing graphics mode" error in DOSBox 0.65, it still doesn't work, unfortunately. It now ends with an error message stating

Could not load sprite set file ACSPRSET.SPR
This means that the file is missing or there is not enough free system memory to load the file

.

I attempted to look at what it was doing with ykhwong's debug-enabled 1106 CVS build and found no helpful information, except that it might be objecting to the fact that it cannot set file attributes.
