Hi,

I have DOSBox 0.65 installed on a Mac G4 733 MHz PowerPC and on a 1.2 MHz G5 PowerPC iMac, and also DOSBox 0.63 installed on a Debian Linux computer (800 MHz x86). I installed DOSBox for two main reasons: 1) to run Wolfenstein (works great), and, more importantly, to run Microsoft Word 5.0.

Word 5.0 is a light, fast word processor nothing like the later bloated Windows versions. I got used to it at work back in the '90s and have wanted to use it at home ever since, but am not willing to have a dedicated Windows or DOS machine.

Word 5.0 works fine in DOSBox, except for one thing: every once in a while, a short section of text in a Word document will be replaced by a random string of ASCII characters (it doesn't happen in a .txt document, though). The interesting thing is that, whether I am using DOSBox 0.65 on PowerPC or 0.63 on Linux, the same approximate section of text in the same document will be replaced by ASCII (although not always the exact same ASCII characters--it's a little different each time).

What could be the reason for this occurrence?

You're better off installing msdos onto a diskimage and copy word there
as well, then running it under dosbox (or bochs). If it really occurs then
as well, have to think about it again 😀

Could this be some old virus?

I couldn't say for sure, but I don't think so, because I've copied this same Word 5.0 onto about five DOS and Windows computers and it has worked fine in DOS, Win 95 and 98, and the Win XP DOS emulator. I still have an ancient 286 laptop with horrible, dim CGA graphics that Word 5.0 is running on.
