subjectively the snare and highhat sound more crisp on yours but I enjoyed the weeds font more. weeds guitar sounds more realistic while yours sounds just like the fake Roland guitar sound I always heard.

weeds sounds a lot better to me. Sounds more Natural to what real instruments sounds like.

For Doom 1, Akai SG01k is my personal favorite, it's loud, over-blown, in-your-face samples just fit the mood best for me.

I take note, the thread is about the best option using only software but didnt know about this midi module, i were searching videos in youtube and it has a very nice clean sound.

Thanks .

Wow, that sounds really good

Edit, haha you made that video, well thanks.

I do a lot of MIDI videos. Whenever people come to me and say they already have Roland and Yamaha but want something new, the Akai is always my first recomendation. It's a very different sound, some games sound amazing others sound awful (orchestral).

You all had to mention a module I didn't have...

Now I have one on the way.

What I have been interested in for quite a while is a non-existent analog synth that is GM compatible.

How cool would that be?

Akai did make an analog rompler based on sounds from different analog synths, but it isn't GM compatible and is really pricey and pretty rare.

I looked at the manual and it is unclear if I could set it up to be used as a GM module.

The other option would be to get an analog style VST and see if I could make a decent patch set that I could use.

I just think it would be super cool to hear game music in analog synth style.

Not exactly what you mean to do, but I have been able to use PLG150-AN with MSX games using MIDI-PAC2 😀

Nice! Now I have another reason to want a PLG150-AN.... I only have the PLG100-DX that came on a SW1000XG... have 3 of the SW1000XG cards now but only that one PLG card.

It looks like the PLG150-AN supports a GM map by default then? Or did somebody set up a custom map? The MIDI-PAC2 looks to just be a real-time translator for MSX to MIDI.

If you do not mind tinkering with some knobs in real time you can get something like this with a soundfont and VST effects:

Hey! Is Falcosoft! First i wanna say you thank you very much for your great work, you made all more easy and accesible for everyone. Since i discover your Midi Player my retro life has changed 😀

Im going to test what you show in the video, the guitar sounds amazing!

I would like your opinion about to use 2 or more synths at same, because i feel that music sounds much more deep/enveloping making my midis sounds like if i would be in a cinema.

Also do you have in mind to add multiple synth option in the same instance of midi player or im the only fool who ask for this?

Thanks 😉

Yes, MIDI-PAC2 just reads music data being sent to PSG and OPLL chips, recognizes the instruments and generates MIDI data in real time. It is setup for GM by default, but you can customize the instrumant mappings to whatever sysex codes you want. The PLG150-AN is not GM compatible, only has 1 part. I just played with the presets until I found one that sounded good and mapped it to the melody. Other parts are played by mu2000ex.

Hi,
Thanks for your kind words 😀
Yeah, your dual synth setup sounds good indeed!
As for adding multiple synth output I do not think it's a good idea. If you consider all different possible Midi Systems ( e.g. MT-32, GS and XG synths) and multiple output modes (standard WinMM Midi out ports, Soundfonts, VSTi plugins) that all could require different settings and balancing then you should realize that the interface would be too much complicated. It would be hard to handle all of this together while keeping intuitive what settings refer to which synth.
So I think overall is much better to associate different synths and settings with different FSMP instances . And with the help of virtual Midi cables you can handle as many synths as you want. Not only 2 but even much more.
In case of DosBox you only need 1 virtual Midi cable that you set as output port for DosBox. And in all instances of FSMP you set the same virtual Midi cable as Midi Input port. LoopMidi, Loopbe etc. are all multi port capable so all instances of FSMP will get Midi messages from DosBox.
For Midi file Playback you also need only 1 virtual cable but instead of DosBox you can use any Midi player (including FSMP itself) and the same setup as above written:
An example:
https://youtu.be/wV8sF_K4iP0

BTW the effect engines of S-YXG50 VSTi ( I strongly believe this is the VSTi plugin that was referred to as Yamaha MU80 emulator by someone) and SC-VA are also very capable. With some prepared SysEx messages both could be used with Doom as well.

I just download amplitube and omggg the guitar sound now looks real, this plugin is really amazing.

Thank you for clarify that S-YXG50 was the referred MU80.

I were doing some tests with YXG50, SC-VA and Weeds Soundfont + amplitube.

I do not think that he added external effects. Dreamblaster X2 + Buran/GUD Soundfont has rather wet built-in reverb and chorus effects by default.
