Hello Guys! How are you?
I'm Gus and started retro pc gaming about 1 month ago.
Apologizes for coming here asking questions in my first post, but i'm getting spanking by MS-DOS sound and don`t know where else to ask.
I`m really amateur with MS-DOS in general.

So, basically my problem is: Don`t get sound sound effects in MS-DOS games using WIN98SE, just the music. In games like: POP AND JILL OF THE JUNGLE.
I have a ASUS P4P800 (chipset drivers installeds)
and a Sound Blaster Live! S0100 5.1
Installed all drivers from here:
https://www.philscomputerlab.com/sound-blaster-live.html I (i choose VDX drivers).
(MS-DOS drivers too)

My device manager looks like this:
3lLnsPv.jpg
9haZgkt.jpg
Forgot to print the DMA screen, but one is 01 and another is 07.

Duke Nukem 3D is the only game i got it all the sounds using the setup.exe
with this config:
8nHTiHG.jpg

Effects and musicsruns perfectly. But tell me, why this works just on IRQ 5 if the device manager tell me the IRQ is 7?
Really getting lost here.

Already tried SETBLASTER commands like SET BLASTER=A2240 ETC...
And already deactivated the serial ports on bios.

Here is my autoexec.bat

  • mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi)
    mode con codepage select=850
    keyb br,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys
    SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
    SET BLASTER=A240 I5 D1 H7 (tried a lot of variations already)
    C:\ARQUIV~1\CREATIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM

and config.sys:

  • CE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\setver.exe
    device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
    Country=055,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

I think that's it, thank you very much guys, hope learning a lot of stuffs here 😀

You should also have the T parameter is the SET BLASTER line. Since yours is a Live, I believe it should be T6.

SET BLASTER=A240 I5 D1 H7 T6

Since you have it working in DUKE3d with those settings, they should maybe work for other stuff as well.

When running the games from within Windows, I don't think you should even need the regular DOS drivers.

Also pretty sure you should be able to use soundfonts for MIDI. Maybe somebody else can chime in here since I haven't done this in a long while.

Hi Cyclone, thank you by your answer!
I added SET BLASTER=A240 I5 D1 H7 T6 in autoexec but nothing happens, same thing...

Well, if it doesn't work without the real DOS drivers, then I guess they are needed. I haven't messed with Live! DOS emulation in a really, really long time.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding specific information about trouble with getting sound from DOS games when run from within Windows with the Live!

Here are a few links that may help though:

Hello guys and cyclone, think i solved it!?
> Windows Clean installation
> this time i used AUDIGY2S Drivers

Now seems fine, please check it and rate:
https://pixeldrain.com/u/nRVqaPVE

Now i understand, running on windows don't require autoexec.bat configs (setblaster etc) or the ms-dos drivers .

In older games like jill of the jungle and DUKE1 i still have no sound effects, but i read online that games are really complicated at sound. So i gave up from it for a while.

Thank u guys, see you soon

because perhaps the SB16 emulation doesn't use the same IRQ as the actual card, check what it says under the SB16 emulation tab.

and by the way, since you mentioned duke3d: with the live! sb16 emulation there's a well-known crash with the reverb effect such as in the E1L2 sewers. there's a patch out there that removes that effect.
