That's a known one too. You must use a fullscreen DOS box: type ALT-ENTER to put it in full screem mode. When it has started up, you may find that the full-screen DOS box won't go away and you need to hit ALT-ENTER again.

Got to be the joy stick problem. You should maybe ask in the VDMSound forum, how to disable joystick emulation.

Also, check that the DOSDRV command actually works when typed into a DOS box.

Sorry to interrupt the software discussion.... but this reminds me of exact the same phenomenon i had, years ago.
The solution proved to be: not only unplug the joystick, but also place it at least 1 meter away from the pc. All the trouble uninstalling and re-installing...while i had placed the unplugged Joystick ON my pc's case! 🤣. 🤣
The problem was gone when i parked the unplugged joystick into the next room.
Then i reproduced the phenomenon, just to check. It was true.
