I have a Micro-Star MS-6103 Dual Pentium Pro board with ODIN OEC12C887A chip for clock. The battery in the chip has died so I decided to replace it. As a replacement I purchased "GW-12887-1 DS12887 RTC Replacement Module " from here https://www.tindie.com/products/glitchwrks/gw … acement-module/

When I plug in the replacement the board doesn't post: no video, no beep. The CPU fan is spinning.

When I put back the original Dallas chip the board also doesn't post.

Before I removed the Dallas chip the very first time, the board was posting just fine, just wasn't holding CMOS settings. After I removed the Dallas chip I tried to boot without it to see if it still boots, it didn't post. I didn't think much of it, thinking ok, the Dallas chip is not just battery and is necessary for the actual operation of the board. I proceeded to buying the replacement, which now also doesn't work. So I thought, lets put back the original Dallas, and found out it also no longer works.

So now I'm puzzled why even inserting the original Dallas chip no longer works. Did I damage the board by trying to boot without the chip at all? Did I damage it by booting with the replacement chip? The original Dallas and the socket look just fine - no visual damage. The replacement chip also looks fine. I did make sure to orientate the chip correctly in the socket.

What can I try to troubleshoot where the problem is? I tried resetting CMOS by shorting pin 7, but that didn't do anything. It probably was pointless anyway as I'd imagine removing the chip had the same effect.

The manual states that the following chips can be used:
Dallas DS12887A
Benchmarq BQ3287AMT
Benchmarq BQ3287

Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k, 48k+, 128k, +2
Amiga 1200, 68030/40mhz
386DX/33, ET4000, SBPro2, MT32
Dual PPro/200, Millennium II, Voodoo 2, AWE32, SC-55
etc.

The board isn't dead.
Booting without a RTC module doesn't kill a board.

You could have lifted a trace or broken a solder joint.
Post a high resolution pic of the back, RTC module area + board without the RTC module plugged in.

It's gonna be fine, just a new adventure for your nerves 😀

Good suggestion. When I removed the chip the first time, it was sitting very tight in the socket, so maybe I caused some minor damage. Will post pics. Thank you.

Did you also watched that arrow on the left bottom is PIN 1.
Same as the dot on your old RTC.

So dont turn the RTC around. Or you might damage it.

~ At least it can do black and white~

Problem solved. It turned out the SIMM closest to the RTC needed to be reseated. Visually it looked fine, but I tried it anyway. Maybe I bumped it when I was removing the original RTC.

Thank you for the help everyone.
