Some thoughts about that:
- Tokyo 2020 olympic games were "the COVID games". Some athletes were left at home and substituted by others; some athletes were forced to not compete because of positives. That should hampered (or benefited) every country, but some countries were more more damaged than others.
- It was going to be Tokyo 2020, not Tokyo 2021. People that wanted to go to the olympic games spent 2019 and 2020 training to be ready (at "peak" performance?) on 2020. Delaying the games to 2021 screwed their agenda.
- Some days ago I read on some comments "Spain has the medals they've paid off". Olympic games are not about athletes, but money invested on athletes. A runner on a poor country has not the same opportunities to develop than on other countries; athletes with no sponsors won't compete.

Other thoughts about that...
- Banners / country flags should be abolished. African athletes compete (and get medals) under european flags, because they got citizenship (most times because a sponsor paid them to train on that countries). Some of them will love their new homes, other ones will be attached to their former countries. So what's the meaning of a flag when money can buy athletes not found on your country? Should Olympic Games be more about people than countries? (Don't ask that questions, everybody knows that they are about money)
- I don't understand some inconsistencies about who can or can not compete on olympic games. In football (soccer for USA guys), Spain sends sub-24 players (I don't know if that's an olympic requirement or a local one); in basket it seems that everybody can compete. Other sports (long running races) seems to not have any age limit. I guess that all sports should have the same limits, and professional sports player should be limited/avoided (i.e.: limit every sport to people under 24, or people NOT playing on top leagues like NBA).

You cared enough to post about how little you care.
You care enough to reiterate how little you care.

When I don't care about something I just don't talk or post about it.

I'm quite happy with our athletes... I only wish the basketball team would get a medal in the end...

I've mostly watched bicycling and basketball... in the end also womens climbing. Paris games are just around the corner...

until you look at all sports not just athletics

it is interesting though, how athletics success has 'spread' around the globe from what i remember as being mostly the usa
