Hi fellow Vogoners I have this kind of question related to comfort rather than h/w compatibility.
Being well aware to stay away from passive matrix equipped laptops, I couldn't help but ask myself what kind of great games would have little motion, scrolling, parallax etc to avoid the slow refresh problem while working well on a 386 16-color STN laptop.
For instance Dangerous Dave 2 is fine performance-wise but the side scrolling instantly causes severe sickness.
The ones I've thought of so far were:

  • text quests, obviously
  • classic EGA quests by Sierra (SQ, PQ, KQ)
  • More action-like-stuff, I've tried Prince of Persia feels surprisingly smooth and has decent 16-color palette.

It'd be great to hear more ideas from you.

Hoyles games type stuff, there's animations of other players etc, but the cards are there long enough to see. I think some of the old MSDOS entertainment pack things would be okay as there's not a lot of "wholesale" movement, just smaller sprites. Some things like Elite seem "trippy" to me, it's like 80s Video effects on a low budget scifi show.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Some action platformer games for EGA don't scroll, such as Night Hunter, and instead redraw the scene when moving to another area -- but the movement of sprites is unavoidable, of course.

If you like puzzle games there are quite a few non-scrolling ones with only a little action like Chip's Challenge, Paganitzu/Chaganitzu, and 7 Colors.

Some things like Wolf3D you might find more tolerable with more border, so there's a "fixed point" either side of the blur. Other top down scrollers with a framed playfield might seem better than others when they're like this too.

Oh a point to note is that these type of screens work faster when they're warmer, so if you've got it in a position where the AC vent is blowing right at it, then you might find it worse than if you sit near a window where the sun is hitting the back of the screen.

Japanese visual novels are pretty to look at and fit true VGA screens (640x480).

Some people mentioned a few titles years ago, maybe one of them appeals you. 😀

early 90's rpg suggestions?&

Old Japanese Games for PC (DOS/Win9x)

Re: VGA games with only 16 colors

Puzzles like Marble Cooking are also playable, since they leave a trail behind.

- Grand strategy and war games (Crap by QQP, Microprose, etc)

- Rogues and rougelikes of satin, shouldn't have to list any here. You might run into a Fn pretzelhand moment though

- Turn-based/non-realtime puzzlers, like The Incredible Machine

World Class Leader Board has little motion in game, runs fine on a 386 and has RealSound (digitized sounds) played through PC speaker.

Also you could be mean and say things like OG MS Flight Sim, Lombard RAC Rally, and Test Drive 1, because the frame rates suck so bad even passive matrix might keep up 🤣

+1

They were Hercules compatible, too,
so they had to be playable on green monitors with afterglow! ;)

I know I played Paganizu in an old laptop with plasma screen, and it was fun.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

DIF-1 Laser Tank is a fun little fixed-screen shooter, perhaps it would look okay on a passive matrix display. I think it's most comparable to a Famicom game called Battle City.
