Well, I suppose I could test with a P3 450 but if this is the problem then shouldn’t I have more performance issues as well?
I'm not really convinced either but if you have a Klamath PIII or earlier you can rule out a compatibility issue. Sometimes there's something weird in BIOS code that only affects a certain combination of hardware. Again, not too convinced but it was my first idea to start troubleshooting.
That being said, what boot options do you have configured? Is it possible the BIOS is trying to boot off another device that isn't present for a long time before eventually giving up and choosing SCSI?
Or is it possible the SCSI controllers both expect some sort of RAID to boot off for some reason before eventually giving up and booting a single drive?
Well I tested with a Klamath and the wait was gone. That moment I thought “ok, didn’t really expect that, let’s switch back to the 700” and now there the wait is also gone. So the plot thickens.
The OS that is on the disk was installed when I was using the AX6BC though and with thát board I had to provide the drivers during the Win2k installation at the F6 step. So just maybe it has to do with that procedure.
On the AX6B+ I didn’t need drivers for some reason. The disks were available in the installer anyway. On the AX6BC however it didn’t work that way. Without the drivers the installer wouldn’t detect any disk.
This result is with the 19160 controller and not the onboard. The onboard is now disabled.
So later tonight I’m going to perform more tests focussing on the onboard controller. Maybe the wait is coming specifically from there.
I will update with my findings!
Update:
I have narrowed it down to the combination of the onboard controller, the cable with terminator and the drive.
As soon as I connect the drive the wait time is back. So it must be something in the negotiation I guess. Sadly I don’t have a different drive or cable at the moment so I can’t test any further.
I will see if I can find other drives and cables to check if those work better.
