Just read your post on "Comments on a PIII build?". You will enjoy my next project. It will feature quite a few games from your list 😀

+1 for an Aureal Vortex 2 PCI card. Works very well under DOS, and even has a wavetable header.

I just pulled the trigger on a SB Live CT4760. I looked into the Aureal Vortex2 and it doesn't seem as readily available, or as cheap. I got the SB Live for about 6GBP. Mistake?

No, definitely not. Live Is a good card (most versions anyway, definitely including 4760) and would be also my choice for a PIII based pure Windows 98 setup.

One question is still there: Do you want to play dos games? If the answer is yes, I would definitely suggest AWE64. You will give up EAX, but for the price of much better DOS compatibility, infinitely less hassle, more than very acceptable sound quality (well, IMHO).

EDIT: Forget about AWE64, I just realized that your choice of motherboard does not have any ISA slots. 🤣

Thanks for the feedback! Once this build is finished and the honeymoon period wears off, I'm going to start looking at a DOS build!

I will maintain that until much later (audigy 2 era) EAX was hardly a thing to give up! Now A3d, that's something else.

The real question is, how do I get my missus to not throw a fit when all these new towers start crawling out of the woodwork 😜

EDIT: I just got a DEAL on a Ti4800SE. Sometimes it pays to search on eBay using the model number, and not the actual model name. It's the Asus v9480/TVD (I'm not sure what the TVD designation is for, possibly S-Video/TV output?)

First (of many) parts arrived yesterday. Took them on a little 'photoshoot'.

Not sure if the Ti4800SE is faster than the Ti4600, but either should be more than enough. I've been comparing my Ti4600 to my Quadro 2 Pro (performance somewhere between GF 2 Ti and GF 2 Ultra), and the two turn in almost identical performance on Unreal Gold on 700MHz, 1000MHz, and 1300MHz P3s/Celerons. The Ti4600 is a lot faster with OpenGL, however.

AFAIK the 4800SE is the 4400 with AGP 8x interface. There is a true 4800, which also goes under the name of 4600 AGP 8x. That is the 4600 with AGP 8x interface. That card is quite rate I believe.

Yeah, I picked up the Ti4800SE at a good price, was cheaper than any Ti4200 at the time, let alone Ti4400.

I've ordered a couple of cards since:

ATI Rage128 Pro AGP
MSI Riva TNT2 Pro AGP

Good choices?

I recently (a few months ago?) purchased one from ebay, (actually won the auction as mine was the only bid: 25 USD). It is an Asus V8460 Ultra Deluxe (4600 ultra 4x), with all the package contents like breakout cables and 3D(?) glasses. I'm still amazed by the weight of the card. It is as heavy as my much modern "extra-big-double-slot-huge-heat-spreader-double-fan" cards. It has so much copper on it! 😁

I really don't know how you did it but, in this picture, the mobo looks like a miniaturized mascot or something, not like a real board. 😁

He's using a rather long lens here, hence the compressed perspective. Maybe something like 85mm for a 35mm camera.

Was taken at around 130mm if I remember correctly. But yeah, it's a telephoto lens, gives really good bokeh for shots like this 😀
