Hello,

I got a Voodoo 1 card and I'm having trouble running any games on Windows 98SE.

Case 1: Win98 recognizes the card. With this driver I tested GTA2 and NFS2SE. I get black screen. Computer is still responsive, I can kill the application with task manager

Case 2: Any of the reference drivers I tried gives me a green screen as soon as I run any of the games. I managed to run Croc 1 once but now it gives me green screen too. I reinstalled Win98, result didn't change.

Case 3: Tested Tomb Raider 1 on DOS, it works totally fine.

Since the card works on DOS but not on Windows, it seems like a driver issue but neither of the drivers worked. Am I doing something wrong? I've never used a voodoo 1 card before.

Can you please help?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that Tomb Raider under DOS works only in software mode. Post a photo of the card.

Which versions of the reference driver for Windows did you exactly try? Have you tested a different DOS Glide game?

I wonder if the gamma slider got overblown because 3dfx V1/V2 cards have a bug with the color ramp that can lead to overflows.

I had similar problems, but with Windows 95. Which DirectX version are you using? Try with a maximum of version 7.0. Then I tried to tinker with the driver by combining two drivers. I'm not sure if that was the right driver, but I'll upload it anyway. It's late here, I'll check it more closely tomorrow.

Hello,

Thank you for all the replies and ideas.

I tried:

- Microsoft's own drivers -> Gives black screen
- voodoo_graphics_driver_kit_july_1998.zip -> This one gives black screen when I start games . I can ctrl+alt+del and kill the application.
- voodoo_graphics_driver_kit_version_3.01.00.zip (latest reference driver) -> this one gives a green screen. Computer freezes.

Weird thing: I forcefully install the card as Voodoo 2 using fastvoodoo drivers and with that Croc 2 works and Croc 2 is the only game that works on Win98.

Tomb Raider 1 on DOS 6.22 works flawlessly with 3dfx patch.

I didn't test any other DOS games, I have screamer 2, GTA1 and Carmageddon I could try but I kind of feel like giving up and returning the card.

I think I have DirectX 6.0 installed on Win98.

Here is the green screen I'm getting.

Do you know any software I could use for testing the card? I wanted to run 3D Mark 99 but as soon as I start it I get green screen again.

Thanks.

For testing the Voodoo card, get the 3dfx diagnostic utility which is a DOS executable called MOJO.EXE.

That shouldn't work because Voodoo2 drivers internally verify the card and would spit startup errors if it can't find a Voodoo2.

Yeah I know, it totally doesn't make sense. But it worked for Croc 2, I even got the 3dfx splash screen. No idea how.

I'm returning the card, just taking it to the post office now.

Thank you all for your input and ideas, I appreciate it.

I'm curious to know what CPU you were using. I'm pretty sure there are some speed-sensitivity issues with the Voodoo 1 card/drivers.

I've seen the green / turquoise screen thing happen when trying to run a Voodoo 1 in win95 / 98 after that OS install had had a Voodoo 2 installed with the Voodoo 2 drivers before. Manually clearing out the Voodoo 2 drivers and reinstalling the V1 drivers helped.

Since Tomb Raider is working in DOS, that confirms the card *is* working.

Also yeah, I wonder what CPU?

From my recent experiences of testing a Diamond Monster 3D Rev B card, I get the green screen with my GA-5AX Rev 4.1 mobo when pairing it with AMD, Cyrix and IDT CPUs - Intel CPUs and my Rise MP6 have no problems with it. Testing it with my Abit VH6T mobo and a 1.2Ghz Tualatin Celeron running at 100FSB*12 also has no issues whatsoever.

So yeah, knowing the CPU and also what FSB it's running at would help a lot at determining whether it's an actual fault with your card or a CPU incompatibility.

Speed sensitivity issues with the Voodoo Graphics card on faster computers are visible with D3D and DOS Glide games where glitches and lockups happen. Depending on the CPU and motherboard chipset, temporarily lowering the FSB to 66 MHz helps.

66 MHz FSB also worked for me (i810 chipset).
The other thing that improved stability a lot for my card was adding a heatsink + fan to the larger 3dfx chip nearest the PCI connector.
