I've been playing around with a Windows XP build lately. It's a sort of 939 System Redux for me. Back in 2005 I replaced my DFI Lanparty nF2 Ultra B + Mobile Barton with a DFI Lanparty UT nF3 + 3700+
I have to admit, I never loved that system. It just felt flat and unexciting after racing Mobile Bartons to 3GHz and 300 FSB. On reflection, the CPU choice was poor and trying to continue using BH5 RAM on the nF3 board wasn't ideal. So over the past few days, I've been tinkering with the following.
- Asus A8N-SLI-Deluxe nForce 4
- Opteron 165 CPU
- OCZ Platinum 2GB Kit OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K
- Titainium XFI-Fatal1ty Champion Edition PCI-E
- Nvidia Geforce 750 ti
- Crucial MX500 240GB SATA SSD
- Windows XP SP3
I know the GPU is not age appropriate - but I love the 60W TDP and no need for auxiliary power to the card. 7800 and 8800 cards are just too fragile to consider and 6800GTs (the card I had back in the day) are too pricey.
I've just finished setting up the system and fine tuning the overclock. I've arrived at just under 2.8GHz (310x9) at 1.4v and some nice 1T tight RAM timings at 2.7v (DDR 200 divider - clocking the RAM to around 310MHz). Stable looping Memtest #5, SuperPI, Prime95 and benchmarks.
