I'm wanting to play Xargon on at least one of my various Windows 9x PCs. I have a Pentium MMX 233 system with an OPTi MAD16 Pro Soundblaster clone. The MAD16 has a genuine OPL3 chip on, and is set correctly for the standard Address 220, DMA 1 and IRQ 7, and the system has 596K of free conventional memory. I've not had any issues getting other games I've tried to work on it, and even Jill of the Jungle works perfectly on it too. However in Xargon, while the music works, I don't get any sound effects.
I've also tried Xargon on my Slot 1 system which has a 1GHz Pentium III with a Soundblaster 16 in. This is also has a genuine OPL3 chip on and is set the same, and has had the same success, with Jill of the Jungle working fine on it. I have slightly more success here, in that some sounds will play, but still not all of them. I forget how much conventional memory this has free, but it gives a warning when it doesn't have enough free, so I presume this is just fine
that way too (and I know I optimised the environment to get Arena and Daggerfall to play on it, which are known for being hungry for it).
On both I've tried under Windows and pure DOS, and that's also made no difference. The MMX system is running 95, the Slot 1 is running 98.
I've also tried what appears to be the original retail release as well as the modern open source freeware release, and this also makes no difference whatsoever.
Also, just to rule it out, yes, it's definitely configured to use sound effects, and they're turned on in-game.
What could be going on here? I've tried using SETMUL to slow down my Pentium MMX system for a try too, but that had no effect on the lack of sound effects.
Thanks.
