Hi,

I'm trying to connect an external computer to the internal gas plasma display of the Compaq Portable III.

Does anyone know what the pinout is of the ~50 pin rectangular video connector that feeds into the gas plasma screen?

I assume I can make an adapter from VGA to that connector to send a video signal to the screen.

You can try to find the datasheet for the display itself, it often has the pinout in it.

It is though very likely that the display does not use any standard vga signalling.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
