So I Just picked this machine up cheap. It checks the ram and posts with the 601-Diskette controller error. Thats as far as it goes. It has one of those barrel battery’s that I snapped off because it was leaking as the always do, but looks to have caused some damage to some traces from leakage. I cleaned the corrosion up and looks better but I’m still skeptical. I’m wondering if that could be giving me problems. It has a header for an external battery that I’m gonna try next. Not sure on which battery I’m supposed to get for it. Also I tried a couple different 3 1/2” drives with the same error. Does it need the bios battery to function at all? I’m wondering where I should go from here.

Could be the lack of a working battery...see https://www.unrelatedshit.com/2016/06/24/hp-6 … t-really-means/

External battery seems possibly to be part no. 160274-001 (or equivalent). See here for more details... https://web.archive.org/web/19961226053538/ht … me1/proldt.html

So today I fired in the new battery and changed the set the jumper, but no luck. After checking the damage on the board from the leaking battery, It appears there are at least 2 maybe 3 traces that were badly damaged. 2 of the 3 of them look like they may go into or around the header for the floppy drive. Im thinking that’s where the trouble is. Could it be possible to jump the damaged areas some how by soldering a new wire? Maybe SOL
