So, I got Win98se running on my laptop, upped the ram to 48mb, and am getting ready to install Mandrake Linux 8.2 for dual-boot (I hope... and after I do a backup).
I'm now looking for a PCMCIA ethernet adapter for it.

it's 16-bit PCCard, as I understand it, so the possible cards is limited by that, and of those I've seen, they only support WEP encryption, not WPA, which my router requires.

Does anyone know of a 16 bit pcmcia card that supports wpa?

If not, would it be possibel to get one of the wep cards, and use my Win7 desktop as a proxy to access the nextwork/internet?
(I've never tried internet connection sharing before, if that's an option?)

Mostly I need to access the network for ease of file transfer etc, but there are also some sites I'd like to try visiting like frogfind and some MUDs.

Are you sure it only supports 16-bit PCMCIA cards?
Personally I use regular ETH NICs and they work fine. If you only will use it for file transfers, it's worth it to plug them up.

WPA is super insecure, and WPA2 is also legacy at this point.

About Linux distros, I know that DSL can work with 32 MB of ram if you use command line only. Maybe you can get away with some ancient distro with 48 MB. Some advice: create a swap partition beforehand.

It's definitely possible. You would need a second wireless card and probably it would need WEP support too. The easiest way is to use a second, ancient router that supports WEP.
If you live in the country and your only neighbors are cows, chickens, etc, using WEP is fine. But if you live in a city, it's extremely risky. It's really easy to hack it.
